@erinbaderin: that’s great!! I’ve been surprised by how into it my 5 year old has been, but it’s been fun to see her develop the skills and want to try new things.

It might be a little tricky for a four year old, but my almost six year old LOVED a National Geographic gemstone dig kit she got for Christmas this year. My 3.5 year old was able to help some, but definitely wasn't as ready for it as her sister. The gemstones they found have been a big hit ever since though and they're begging to "dig" for more.

@castilrm: Just wanted to thank you again for the cooking idea - I got my 4 year old son a bunch of kid sized utensils, knives, an apron and hat, and a kid’s cookbook and he LOVED it, he made his own lunch today and then crepes for afternoon snack.

@ElbieKay: We love the Dad Lab! I've done the one where you pour water down the string both at home with DS and at school with my students. It's pretty amazing every time.

I also bought a book of science experiments on Amazon but to be honest I have not had a chance to plan ahead and get the supplies together to do any of them. My 6yo has 2yo twin sisters so unfortunately it is hard to find time for this sort of stuff.

Emily's Wonder Lab is amazing!!!! I love the fact that she filmed all of those shows 9 months pregnant.

My 5 yo is always doing experiments so definitely following for ideas. Honestly, he just likes to mix stuff up and call it an experiment. So he'll take basically everything we have in the kitchen (flour, cornstarch, baking soda/powder, sugar, vinegar, rice, cocoa powder, etc) and mix it up into a potion. We've gone through so much food coloring!!!! He got some science kit for his birthday and I found a few books that have a bunch of ideas that use household items. Crayola also make some kits that I've been able to find pretty cheap if I catch a sale on Amazon or Target. We also have the one that @Chuckles: linked to above. Otherwise we watch science experiment for kids videos on Youtube to get more ideas.

There’s a lot of crossover between science and cooking - he might like the Raddish cooking club. My 5 year old is currently doing the KiwiCo/Koala boxes and the Raddish ones, and she loves both. Also, if you search Netflix for Emily’s Wonder Lab and YouTube for kid science shows, those are fun for the kids to watch and then you get ideas for what to recreate at home. We’ve also gotten various science lab kits off Amazon like the one below and have had fun with those.

We listen to an awesome podcast - But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids, and they have one about chemistry and experiments (from May 2020). It's available on Spotify or here: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/474377890/but-why-a-podcast-for-curious-kids.

I have no subscription to recommend because I don't have enough patience to do that... but have you done the egg in vinegar experiment? something similar to that.
https://science-u.org/experiments/bouncing-egg.html#:~:text=Fill%20your%20container%20with%20about%201%20cup%20of%20vinegar.&text=Carefully%20place%20a%20raw%20egg,are%20ready%20to%20take%20out.

we had more steps as we added corn syrup at the end in the jar...
My son (7) did it during the pandemic for school and it was the science highlight of the summer. (my daughter (4) still talks about it). I still have the printout somewhere if interested..., including other experiments.

My son is 4, and he's constantly asking to do science experiments. We have a subscription to Koala Kits, and that's the high point of his month, but it's not enough. We've done the basics - baking soda and vinegar, milk/food colouring/dish soap, etc, but does anybody have any recommendations for subscription boxes, experiement kits, books, etc. that are geared for younger kids? Thanks!
