A resident tried to do my epidural first and had a really difficult time and it did not take. The attending came in and did it in less than five minutes perfectly. So my suggestion would be to have a more experienced anesthesiologist place your epidural. I have not had surgery, but I know a woman who had rods placed and was told she could not get an epidural. I asked at my hospital visit and they had the anesthesiologist come and feel my spine and they said not to worry.
