@lamariniere: ooo good tip! And it Sounds like a cheap one of either would be a mistake.

@sunny: @birdofafeather: @rattles: ok I am leaning towards scooter or possibly both.

If you get the scooter, you should get the Micro Maxi instead. The base height is the same as the Mini, but you'll get years more use out of it! My kids use their scooters all the time. We had a cheap balance bike (all plastic) and my son used it maybe 3 times.

My LO didn't like the balance bike at all, but loved the scooter. We also got the micro mini for her around 2.5. She's still using it at 4 yo.

@rattles: Agree. We did a cheaper scooter first and it sucked. I found the micro mini used and no regrets trading it in! I would say scooter for a 2 year old as my very physical kiddo didn't get into her balance bike til closer to 3. And we had it since 1.5!

We have both. Where do you envision LO using it? For example, my almost 2.5 year old can ride the scooter on a 1 mile walk on sidewalks (it took a bit of time for him to learn to navigate the bumps/ cracks). He loves the bike, but tires of it on a walk so we don't use it as transportation, just up and down the sidewalk in front of the house. My oldest didn't really get into his balance bike until closer to 3. He was riding a real bike with no training wheels on his fourth Bday, so not using it until 3 did not hold him back. We have a strider balance bike and a micro mini scooter. Based on my experience, I would recommend scooter first.

I don't think you can go wrong, but I wouldn't do a cheaper scooter. The micro mini is so easy to use compared to cheaper scooters, especially for that age! (We just scored one from Target for $55, which is at least a little more manageable.) We went back and forth between a balance bike and the scooter last year for DD1's 3rd birthday. No regrets! DD2 turned 2 last week and is getting one for Christmas because they both love it so much and fight over it.

@Mrs. Pen: that's what I was thinking, especially since my parents are the ones getting him the big present of play kitchen... he obviously doesn't know yet but I really don't want to set a precedent of these crazy gift extravaganzas, but maybe I can start next year. Lol.

Scooters haven't been a very big hit with either of my kids.

R is really physical and tries to ride his brother's big bike by just scooting with his feet. So he's getting a balance bike for his bday in a few weeks :) He'll be 2.

We have both and they both get a lot of use, but the balance bike definitely gets more. We got a Little Tykes scooter for about $25 and gave it to him for Easter.

Strider balance bike!
My son loved his and rode it for years. The transition to riding a two wheel bike has been pretty seamless! I'd recommend it to anyone

help! I can't decide what to get for 2yo. He will be 2 just after xmas. I was leaning towards balance bike but now I am wondering if scooter is better. Here are the ones I have been considering:

Micro Mini deluxe scooter
http://www.microkickboard.com/micro-mini-deluxe

Clobber 5 in 1 scooter
https://www.globberscootersusa.com/products/globber-5-in-1-scooter

or a balance bike, maybe one of these three:
http://www.microkickboard.com/micro-balance-bike
https://www.striderbikes.com/classic
https://yvolution.com/en/Balance-Bikes/Y-Velo-Jr-c60c107.html

I really want to get him both but I feel like I am going overboard. But, since his Bday is right by christmas, I could potentially have to wait a whole year to get him the other one, whichever I choose. Or I could randomly give it to him. I don't know what to do!
