@aegie: thank you! I'm going to try this next time the drama starts! She can't explain yet but it might be a worthwhile attempt at distraction.

@Mrs. Jacks: lol. I never thought she'd be one for dramatics. This girl has played so hard falling off furniture and ended up cracking herself up. It's a phase hopefully!

@SugarplumsMom: Yes with the ointment! She gets mysterious places that need dabbing after bath.

@Mama Bird: That makes total sense.

For the most part she's tough but there's weird things that have set her off. Different things have worked - sometimes she's just scared and a mini exam showing her there's no blood and everything still bends, sometimes she goes in and gets a bandaid for a bruise, she doesn't do it that often so we just go with it. What's worked the best recently is explaining that when she eats her meal her body has energy to make her boo boo better. She did have one time when she wouldn't take her arm out of her sleeve all day, even when playing with her friend and riding her bike, we just ignored it.

This sounds a bit silly, but maybe when they see the bruise is still there for a few days, they think it won't go away? B skinned a knee a while ago, and he wasn't super dramatic about it, but every time he noticed it he'd point and say "boo boo?" and look all disturbed. It wasn't hurting him, I think he was just weirded out that it stuck around for two weeks.

Heh I totally agree it's an attention thing. But two nights ago, e was really upset and i realized she skinned her knee really badly so I think the tub hurt it. Mickey bandaid to the rescue

E is still pointing at the healed over, tiny dot of a scab she picked over a week ago. You can't even see it now and she still points to it and whines about her 'hurt'. She also makes me put "ointment" on her toes, like every other day. It started when she actually hurt her toe and I dabbed a little bit of witch hazel on it. Now she asks for ointment out of nowhere!

when paige falls down I've noticed that if I say, "upsy daisy now .... up up up" she gets up and doesn't make a big deal about it. It's when I make a fuss, she fusses. So I try not to have a reaction at all to her bumps and bruises. If it's bad, yes I tend to it and give her loving, but I really really try hard to now give it too much attention. If she brings it up at a later time, it's usually because she wants to tell me about what happened, so I let her explain to me what happened instead of the drama mama craziness. So when she starts pouting and says I have boo boo. I quickly ask her, what happened, did you fall down? where did you fall down - on your knee or your head? and make it into a conversation. That way I'm hoping she knows she can tell me what happened but the hysterics need to stay out of the conversation.

@shopaholic: This last one was a 48 hour drama fest for us. She just started walking this morning! How on earth did *I* raise such a drama queen?! It feels really nice to know I'm not the only one :)

ITA about the toughing it out and Bandaids for necessity. Trouble this time was that all the wounds last week were legitimate open wounds with raw skin. I think they were kind of different for her and now they've healed over, I can't stop the drama. So the transition period, before the skin looks totally normal is the problem I'm having now.

@shopaholic: I agree, my daughter can be a drama queen and INSIST she needs a bandaid, princess one. Well I've gotten rid of princess/all character bandaids, if she needs one she will get an ugly brown one. But our rule is blood = bandaid, that's it!

Our family motto like @Mrs. Jacks is "shake it off, you're tough" and she literally shakes her body ;)

@shopaholic: I really do not indulge her, she just puts on a show for fun, I think. I don't even have band-aids at home because she's so cautious she never does anything to get hurt. The 'owies' are just from shots and she babies them for weeks. So when she throws her drama queen fit when she sees her band-aid I just walk away and let her have her moment, but don't ever give her any attention. It doesn't escalate to much, but she sure keeps trying.
If she does get seriously hurt I scoop her up and give her some love, but I know the difference when she smacks her knee into the corner of our fireplace vs when she stumbles on a pillow and thinks her world just ended :silly:

@shopaholic: I don't feed into it at all. No bandaids. If you are going to hobble, hobble. Don't ask me to pick you up. I'm not going to kiss it. I'm going to ignore it. Someday it will go away. Our motto is "toughen up!" ;)

No advice, but L is the same! She's never been too rough-and-tumble though, just drama queen. Whenever she sees a band-aid again, she starts whining and saying 'owwie!'. For fun I moved her band-aid from her thigh to her foot during a diaper change. She was preoccupied and didn't notice. Several minutes later I pointed out the band-aid on her foot and she started whining and limping... ::eyeroll::

My normally rough-n-tumble girl has become a DRAMA QUEEN when it comes to scrapes and bruises since last week. She had a real blister that she popped. I understand that probably hurt for a few days, but it's healed over and really shouldn't be painful after a week right? Then she got a couple of scrapes on her knees (through leggings, but no blood). It's been almost a week and it's FULL-ON crying waterworks and whining when she thinks of it, when she sees them, when they're covered in bandaids, when they're not covered in bandaids, etc. You get the gist. DH think it is just for attention at this point, but I don't know what to do. Bandaids, cleaning, covering them up, kissing "boo boo", ignoring, telling her it's ok, etc - nothing stops the hysterics when she thinks of any "boo boo".

Suggestions?
