I saw "we don't hit, that hurts". Then I take her hand and gently touch my face with it and say "we use gentle hands to touch other people". If she does it again, I put her down and walk away and tell her "I don't want to play with you when you hit. We can play again when you use gentle hands". All she wants is attention so me walking away from her is the worst punishment.

LO does this when he's mad. Just today, he didn't want to get in his carseat to go to the doctor and hit me. I grabbed his hands and said a firm, "No...we do not hit mama." That usually results in him crying uncontrollably. So unfortunately, I have no advice :bummed:

@blackbird: HAHA! Such a little jerk... kids are!!

L went through this for a month or so. Thank goodness it didn't last much longer :/ It was around 10 months too, so I really didn't know what else to do besides telling her no and redirecting her.

Lo does this a lot; at that age it was kind of randomly, now he does it when he's angry. I would just say "That hurts me, please stop" and if he continued, I would put him down and walk away for a minute.

I hold her hand and gently touch my face, and say "gentle touches please." If I'm hurt I sometimes just need to set her down and walk away for a second. She has no idea what she's doing, but I need to teach her to be gentle with others

ugh. L hits if he's frustrated too. I guess it's more of a flail, because I don't think he's intentionally slapping us, but more just slapping something/anything in arms reach....

Would love to hear what others do.

my LO is a hitter (usually only hits me though) and its tough :bummed: I usually take her hands and hold them down and say "no, we do not hit, be gentle, be nice". She only does it when she is mad or frustrated. Interested in hearing what others do about this, because I feel like my strategy rarely works!!

LO is 9.5 months, and has started doing both of these things. Scratching more than hitting... he will reach out to touch my face (or anyone's face), and then he'll dig his nails in and claw! Owww! I always pull away and say "That's not nice!" but he just kind of looks at me and laughs, haha. I'm sure he has no idea what I'm saying...

He also started swatting at us when he's mad. If he's frustrated or tired and fussing, and we try to make him laugh, he'll hit at us!

Is this normal behavior for this age? I've just been redirecting him when he hits... I don't want to give a strong reaction in case that makes him want to do it more (though I'm not sure if he realizes what he's doing). What do you do when your LO hits and scratches?
