Every. Single. Time. I eliminated naps when DS was 2.5 years old. He occasionally naps when he has a long day, and I dread the wake up. He is so mean and cries nonstop for 15+ minutes. It's so frustrating. I have tried so many things to see if I can help transition him into awake mode. He just needs to get it out of his system, and I try to stay calm. It takes a while, and I have to be very patient.

@NovBaby1112: I could have written your same post, word for word! So I know exactly what you mean about them not "being themselves" and acting inconsolable. It scared me so bad the first time he did it, I thought he was having a night terror or something.

Yes lo has gone through phases of doing this, I think it's because sometimes she wakes before she's ready.

@lilyann: I'm sorry you've gone though this as well- it's SO tough not being able to comfort your child! I kept trying to distract her with things that usually interest her, but it was like she was in this weird state and wasn't herself at all....so tough.

@Lindsay05: @kml636: I thought overtired as well, but she's done this after napping for 1.5-2 hours before. Today for instance, she woke up at 7am, nap was at 12:15 and woke up at 2:10 screaming. And usually when she wakes up from a nap early, I can always rock her back to sleep if she's still tired. It is just so strange!!

LO does this every single time he wakes up. He needs 2-3 minutes and some good distraction but then is completely fine.

LO does this if he either wakes too soon from a nap or if he has a really long (2+ hours) nap--it's like he has a nap hangover. I just cuddle and carry him around, which is usually what he wants, til he calms down.

If LO wakes up screaming/crying, it's usually because she is still tired. I usually just let her stay in her crib and let her either try and fall back asleep or until she settles down.

OMG! DS (19 months) has done this to me a handful of times and it really freaks me out every time. I am so sorry momma  I remember how frustrating/sad it was to watch and not be able to do anything to help him or stop him from crying. He hasn't done it in a while but I remember taking him outside got his mind off whatever it was most of the time.

LO (almost 18 months) has been having these screaming/crying fits when waking up from her nap every so often. Today, after sleeping 2 hours, she woke up in almost a rage like state. For about 15-20 minutes I couldn't calm her down at all- I tried cuddling, rocking, singing, giving her milk, her blankie, etc....and nothing worked. She arched and pulled away when I tried to hold her and wouldn't even let me touch her. It was so bizarre. I honestly had no clue what to do! I finally just put her back in her crib and let her scream away until she calmed down.

At first I thought it might be a sleep/night terror, but she is totally awake when she does this. Has anyone else's LO's done this?? I have no clue what it could be....
