We didn't do CIO but I do remember that the whole pulling up and crawling phase was when LO had the WORST sleep. Like was a crazy woman. Sometimes had to pin her down so she would stop pulling up like an insane jack in the box and actually sleep! It did pass like all the phases do but I thought we'd all loose it in the meantime. And she didn't STTN Until 14.5 mo. Le sigh.

My first was a terrible sleeper and reacted like this to sleep training at 9 months. I was determined to continue and we had one night where he cried hysterically for hours upon hours. It was beyond horrible. In the end, it took more than a week of the worst you could imagine and he finally started sleeping through the night. For about 3 months until he got sick and it all went to shit again. We decided to never do it again. It just wasn't a good fit for us.

DD was like this (screaming, would throw up right away, etc), so we stopped trying to sleep train her because it was clearly so distressing. We adapted as best we could and did some cosleeping. Eventually she outgrew it.

I know that's probably not what you want to hear in the moment, because it wasn't a quick fix for us, but you aren't alone!

My LO would cry so hard until he vomitted. I never really did much sleep training and thought it was not right for us. I would let him fuss but would always comfort him if he started getting out of control. We did hit phases though where it was getting your every 2 hours. We just powered through those points.

When we sleep trained just after six months it was just so she'd go to sleep by herself (was already sleeping through the night) but I had some hours long nursing and rocking battles where getting her to sleep nursing just wasn't working anymore.

I ended up needing to do extinction cio with no checks because the two separate nights I went in (after about 10/15 minutes) she ended up throwing up everywhere and I felt awful and nursed her to sleep because I thought her stomach would be empty and she was so worked up that she crashed. I feel like she got super worked up and then she calmed down for me, but her stomach was still all worked up? I don't know. Honestly, it was really crappy for a week putting her to bed and I dreaded it. I have a video baby monitor and I still sat outside her door and watched her and listened to her full on scream and cry for 45 minutes. After a week we were mostly good and by two weeks great. It altered her day time personality for a week and I thought I had permanently made her sad, but then she was fine and goes for naps and bed time with me nursing, sometimes reading a story then saying goodnight, and leaving the room.

Also, she was pulling up on the crib at this point and sitting up in there and just starting to roll over so it was interesting.

Like everything else, test if your kid will need hecks or not and for some kids (as stated in other threads and above, it just unfortunately doesn't work and you have to submit to whatever it takes to give them some sleep and try again a bit later).

ETA: she didn't throw up when I left her to cry herself to sleep, only when I went in to check on her for some reason.

Our ped told us to sleep train at 8.5 months. She screamed until she vomited and flipped her days and nights. It was horrifying. After six days I told my husband and the ped to go f*** themselves and went back to nursing to sleep.

We're going through something similar now. LO2 (almost 1 but 10 months adjusted) suddenly freaks the f out about going in the crib, whereas before, I may get some crying, but mostly fussing and then she'd be asleep. This week, she is standing and literally screaming as long and as hard as she can. For me, I determine whether to go in based on how her cries sound. I can really tell when she is crying bc she is mad or overtired (if which case it won't last long and me going in will only prolong things) or if she is really distressed. I always go in when I think she's distressed. I try to still put her down awake but I don't stress it if she falls asleep rocking.

We had this happen - not the gagging (scary!), but the sudden inability for CIO to work after it working prior at almost exactly 8 months. He was escalating to a degree he never had before and it was just different in character to previous sleep training attempts. It was so bad that I actually broke out my pretty much unused baby book to record it for future babies. We just powered through. We determined he was actually hungry and would go back to sleep. It vanished and he was back to STTN as quickly as it started.

Obviously, there's a lot more to this (as there is with any sleep post!!) but long story short, LO is 8.5m and probably going through the 8m sleep regressions as he just learned how to pull-to-stand and is on the cusp of real crawling. His night sleep is crap now, whereas it was decent before. In the past we've worked on sleep via graduated checks and that usually helped- after a couple nights, LO would start mostly STTN most nights. This time around, NO it is NOT working. LO is SCREAMING, pulling up on the edges of the crib, crying so hard he is gagging and it sounds like it's hard for him to breathe. ETA: When this happens (basically every time) I go in to comfort him.

Did any of your LOs do this? How did you handle it? Even with a Ferber or complete-CIO method, shouldn't I go in and calm him down? How much calming?

Last night it got so bad that after 30 minutes of attempted calming, I just gave in and nursed him .... basically every 2-3 hours all night :-/
