@BabyBoecksMom: @kiddosc: @rahlyrah: @Anagram: @mrsmenow: @HabesBabe: @travellingbee: thanks so much for all your responses bees! so relieved to hear that you all were able to use second hand pumps from reliable sources with no problems. eases my mommy-to-be guilt!

@Foodnerd81: it was super gross hey. DH was looking at the pump last night and wondering how the milk would travel back in the tubes b/c it looks difficult! So hopefully it wont happen much anyway. Thanks for the response!

I used a pump my friend gave me (and she used it with her two kids)-- like other bees, I bought new tubing and parts, but reusing didn't bother me because I know my friend well.

@bunnymommy: oh that post was sort of gross! I still fail to see how it's any different from one mom usin it for two kids though.

Fwiw I have a medela double electric (same as the pump in style advanced but without the stylish bag) and I have never seen milk travel back in the tubes. I also don't pump that often.

@bunnymommy: My SIL gave me her pump and I used it for 3 months (until it died). I had read about the potential for mold, but the chances of milk actually backing up into the pump are pretty slim to begin with. You can open it up and inspect it to make sure there isn't mold growing. I also bought new tubing and parts for mine.

@bunnymommy: nope, never had a problem! I pumped for almost a year with LMW (with a pump from a friend whose kid is about 1.5 years older than LMW) and no problems.

@Mrsbells: I can definitely buy a closed system pump here - and I'm willing to spend the cash if it's too risky for LO for me to use this one, just trying to understand why second hand pump use is frowned upon? (obv only if you're getting it from someone you know though - can understand the risks with buying one from an unknown)

@JoJoGirl:  our medical aid here doesn't cover pumps - so lame!

@blackbird: @mrs. wagon: thanks for responding! I assume your LOs didnt get sick or have any negative outcomes from the pumped milk? I was also thinking that logically, the mould risks should be the same right?

@Foodnerd81: I also think so? I don't really understand why the mould risk would be different but it seems to be a big factor in warnings against second hand pumps. With the closed system, the milk doesnt come back up the tubing so it cant get into parts of the pump that can't be cleaned/sterilised; so theoretically no mould will build up (unless you dont clean your pump I guess). My DH and I read this and it made me wonder what we should be doing --

I never looked into this fr myself but it sounds like the disease risk isn't really a factor since you know your cousin is disease free. The mold risk would be the same as someone using the same pump for multiple kids right? I don't really know te difference between open and closed systems though.

I feel like if you inspected all the parts carefully and sterilize what you can it would be ok?

I borrowed an open system pump from a friend both times. I just bought new tubing and parts. I would think that if someone used a pump for several months the concern for mold would be the same as using someone else's pump... and I wasn't concerned about any disease transmission since they were borrowed from friends who were healthy.

I got a used pump from a friend. She cleaned it really well and then i cleaned it before I used it. I could've bought more tubing and stuff but I wasn't concerned.

if it is an open system then I definitely wouldnt use it second hand. Are you able to buy a closed system pump online and have someone ship it out you in South Africa? The Lansinoh pump is closed system and much cheaper some other brands

I'm 36weeks with our first take-home baby and I'm wanting to get a pump. I have a manual pump already but am anticipating that I'll want to pump quite frequently (for a variety of reasons) so would need an electric one. They're SO expensive here and my cousin offered me her second-hand Medela Swing...I know I've read that you shouldn't use second hand breast pumps b/c risk of infection and I definitely don't want to put LO at risk for anything - but everything I've read says there is a risk for HIV and CMV transmission (which I'm not worried about as she's clear for both) and a LOT about mould.

So my question is this: if you have an open system pump where milk can backflow so parts of the pump that CANT be cleaned/sterilised retain milk particles and this creates mould, isn't that bad for any baby? what would be the difference in me buying my own pump for LO and using someone else's (except obv that it's my milk particles vs hers)? Surely either way, there will be mould in the milk over time?
