I didn't get any special directions for my second baby - basically the same as the first. Things definitely progressed faster for baby #2 though!

And I went into labor at 37 weeks too, so it can happen!

I was also told to head in early as I had a rather fast first birth already (6h from first contraction to baby). Now in the end my early labor was a lot longer with baby 2 (13h or so) but once real contractions hit she was born in just about 20min. So had I not gone to the hospital once I was sure the contractions were real (after 6h of early labor or so) - she would have been born in the car.

I was told to go in when they were 7-8 minutes apart. I was already 4 cm dilated so they didn't want me hanging out at home too long. My contractions weren't super strong or painful, but it did hurt a bit. I was convinced the doctor was just going to send me home. Nope, I was 6 cm. 4 hours later she was here.

I would call when you think things are happening m. Good luck!!

With both of my kids, it was waiting until contractions got more regular. The second time, we organized our toddler for a babysitting stay. By that point, the contractions were pretty regular and fierce. I went into labor around 9am and had him at 6pm. I was GBS positive, so they did everything they could to delay delivery until the four hour mark.

@matador84: well my first labor wasn't that short so there is no reason to think this one would be crazy fast- and if I went in every time I felt off I would already have gone in three times. But my friend recently said she barely made it to the hospital (after being 6 days past her due date). The end of pregnancy is such a mind game.

If think for your next one you'll need to be ready to deliver at home.

At the hospital they told me 5-1-1 or if my water broke. I went from feeling a little sick to delivering in less than an hour so I should have just gone in for even feeling off.

Who knows what I'll have to do if I have another one!?!

With my first my contractions were 2-3 minutes apart right from the beginning! Thankfully I had a doula to help me decide when to go in. As a result, though, I am even more nervous about timing this time around.

My doc told me the 5-1-1 rule, but I stopped counting pretty early on. I was basically just holding on until my mom arrived (water broke at 11 pm, my arrived at 115 am) and I went from feeling in control to absolutely out of control panicked within 15 minutes. Got to the hospital at 210 am, DD2 born at 3am. Next birth, I am really going to the hospital right away. Or I'm pretty sure I'm having the kid at home or in the car on the way.

I knew I was supposed to go in "earlier" because I was GBS+ with my 2nd, but she didn't give me really any guidelines beyond the 5-1-1. It was more just that I shouldn't try to labor at home since they'd want to give me antibiotics. Labor with LO1 was long...like 2 days of timeable contractions.

I started having contractions at 39+5 around 9:30a but didn't have anything to time them with because we were hiking. I tried counting in my head and figured they were about 30s long and some minutes apart, but not super-painful. We got home and DH called the nurseline to see if we should come in, and she said yes bc of the GBS+ and I had been dilated to 3ish the week before. We pulled up to the hospital at 1130a, and baby was in my arms at 12:04. Soooo...yeah. But I swear that each contraction was never a minute long. Or particularly painful!

I'll be no help because for my second lo my midwife said to call her at the first signs of labor. My first lo I had an induction so I wasn't sure how labor would start. I ended up waking up at 12.20am with painful contractions that were 5 mins apart already. Of course I was in denial so got up and bounced on the birth ball etc, then got husband up at 2am to tell him I was in labor, rang the midwife at 2.30 and told her to come to my house to check me since I didn't believe I was far along (normal contractions were no where near as painful as my induction ones) she checked my and I was 8cm, so got an ambulance to the hospital and baby was born at 4.43am! So I'd say probably when they're painful and consistent

They didn't give me any different guidelines with my second. My first birth was quite quick, so I was nervous. It ended up being fine, I had a dr appt that day. I went to my regular appt at 3 and I was just starting to get uncomfortable, regular contractions. They were running behind, so they saw me at 330, I was 4cm. Baby was born 2 hours later.

My second labor story is soothing if you want that (not my first labor, but oh well): I went into labor with LO2 at about 2:30, my water broke at 5:30, at 6 we called grandma to watch LO1, at 6:05 we called her again and told her to hurry. By 7:30 we were at the birthing center and I was in transition, but then I had a nice three hours of unrushed labor and pushing until baby came at 10:30. Steady, even, not frantic progression. It can happen!

My first labor was really long (over a day), and labor with my second happened so quickly. I was hesitant to head to the hospital since I had contractions on and off in the weeks leading up. I woke up in the middle of the night and just gave my DH the head's up that something might possibly happen. I had a hunch that this was the real deal, and the contractions were more consistent. Everything happened so quickly, and I'm glad DH rushed us to the hospital. The baby was born a few hours later.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: I was told "I'd know" last time too- and it was true, I knew. I was about 4 when I got checked in and had baby in my arms less than four hours later. (But had been in labor at home for a long time). I figure "I'll know" again but I'm just afraid once I know I'll go to ready to push really fast!

My doctor's office has you call the answering service before you go in. This time my water broke before contractions (and they were incredibly painful immediately versus my barely noticeable ones with my first labor) so we called and were told to come in right away.

I want to get through hosting Thanksgiving and probably tomorrow will start eating pineapple, bouncing on exercise ball, etc to get things going. I'm 39 weeks.

I heard different things from my practice. My midwife and I settled on 3 min apart since my first labor was 51 hours.

My second labor snuck up on me since the contractions didn't hurt until 2 minutes apart. If you get timeable contractions you should pay attention to them regardless of intensity. I should have stuck with the 5-1-1. That was about 2.5 hours before LO was born. Since I waited until I felt like I was really in labor ( like the feeling I had at the start of labor with #1) I transitioned in the car and was 10cm when I arrived.

@Cherrybee: yeah they did. They started getting slower and less intense after I downed two big bottles of water so I was pretty sure it wasn't the real deal but then I was awake for a few hours (like 3;30-6 am). And of course had to pee every twelve seconds. Slept in a little while DH got c up.

I did have spontaneous labor and now i do remember what contractions felt like- but I've heard too many stories lately of second time moms barely making it to the hospital! My friend was just a week late yet barely made it once labor started.

@Foodnerd81: Have the contractions calmed down now?

I think it's so funny that, the first time around, we would preface questions like this with "FTM question, sorry!" - and now we're doing it for the second time we are still none the wiser!! I haven't got a clue what a normal contraction feels like (I never even had braxton hicks) so I'm not going to know if I'm in labour or not!!

I heard different things from different midwives. Ultimately we ignored the advice and went in when contractions (that had been regular for hours) shifted from me having to pause in conversation to deal to me not being able to talk at all and needing to focus. Second baby was 8 hours from first contraction to baby.

@Truth Bombs: luckily I did just get the results of the GBS test back and they were negative so that's one less thing to worry about. My mom's second baby was born in the emergency room after speeding through red lights to get there, movie style... But she had five kids and that's the only dramatically fast one. :)

They told me to come as soon as contractions were consistent. My mom had her second baby in under 4 hours plus I was GBS+ so my doc didn't want to take any chances. As it turned out it was a moot point for me because my water broke in the middle of the night at 37+5

For second babies, did your doctor give you different guidelines in terms of when to call or go into the hospital in labor? First time the midwives went by the 5-1-1 rule. This time my midwife has mentioned not waiting until then because I could have the baby in the car (and I had a relatively long labor with my first).

Been up for an hour and a half with mild/ moderate contractions, but they are getting weaker spacing out further so I'm sure I just didn't drink enough yesterday and overdid it cleaning. I'm 37 weeks today. So, 90% sure this isn't it but now I'm obsessing and I haven't actually talked at length with my midwife about when to call or come in.
