My midwife actually told me that in the majority of cases, your water doesn’t break before contractions start.

very interesting, thanks all! i still have no idea what to expect but sounds like water breaking first is a definite possibility.

I didn't vote.

My first was induced when I had a high water leak at 40+1. During the induction, the doctor's finished breaking my water.

For my second, I was induced at 41+4 when DD didn't pass a Non Stress Test. I have no idea when my water broke during the induction. It was probably during delivery.

Same as you, my water broke with my first and I ended up being induced.

With my second, contractions started and my water did not break until literally one minute before baby was born!!

Contractions were sooooo much more manageable when I wasn’t induced and my water was intact.

My first my water broke at home and I had to be induced from there. With my second, contractions were more noticeable. I did have a small rupture but my water never fully broke, I labored at home and ended up delivering the baby within 2 hours of arriving at the hospital. Recovery has been much easier the second time, some of it I think it is due to not having to be induced as well as my body knowing what to expect..

My story is similar to yours - water broke (early, not quite 37 wks), no contractions, had to be induced the following morning. With my second contractions came fast and furious on their own - about 3.5 hours from first contractions to baby in my arms. My third was an induction due to IUGR, so no water breaking or contractions.

Water broke spontaneously for both. In both cases, I hadn't had any contractions prior to the water breaking. They started within about 2 hours with my first after I rolled around on a yoga ball for a few minutes. With my 2nd, they didn't start for 5 or 6 hours after my water broke, but my midwife administered an enema to get things moving, and they started within 20 minutes of that.

DD1: water broke, no contractions, had to be induced hours later.
DD2: contractions til fully dilated, dr broke my water 5 minutes before she was born.

About as opposite as you can get!

water broke for both, but i was not induced. first, contractions did start for 2 hours, but i walked about 3 miles in between. i wanted a medfree birth if possible and my OB just said if my water broke to come in a few hours later. with my second, my water broke and contractions started immediately. with my third, contractions started, then my water broke and she was born 17 minutes later.

So I voted water broke for first, contractions for second. But with my first, looking back I was in early labor that day. I just didn't know it! I thought it was braxton hicks and my back was sore from all the errands we were doing. My water broke at like 1am and the intense contractions started immediately. He was 2.5 weeks early.

For my second, I had been having contractions all day but nothing consistent or timeable. They would be like 5 minutes apart for a bit, then nothing for 2 hours. Then every 20 minutes. It was annoying. My water broke at 11:30pm and contractions were immediately on top of each other. This one was a week early.

Water broke and I was induced for both my first and second. With my third, I had contractions for days on and off, and then finally actual labor. They broke my water for me around 8 cm, and I had him shortly after. Totally different the third time around!

Yup, mine broke both times. Actually, they were pretty similar. Both came a week early and water broke in bed, although LO1 was kind enough to wait until I had a full night's sleep and LO2's water broke at like 2am. Good luck!

labor with my first started with my water breaking overnight, i went into the hospital and was induced, so all of my contractions were the result of medical intervention.

now i'm counting down the days (4!) until my due date and wondering how labor will start this time. my doctor said there's no reason to think my labor will start with my water breaking a second time, but curious on folks' anecdotal experiences. has anyone had subsequent pregnancies begin with water breaking? or is it far more likely that i'll have contractions first this time?

curious about all experiences but just asking about second pregnancies in the poll to avoid over-complicating.
