@looch: We're looking into cameras too. DH was just talking about a motion sensor camera that could be connected to the network and send us a picture if it triggered too.

@Mamaof2: I would seem to make sense to do that but I *really* don't want another monthly bill.

@LaughLines: LOL. I have nothing valuable anymore! They stole it all the first time. That's part of why we haven't really bothered with an alarm or anything afterwards.

We're looking into better solutions, but the light was just an immediate hopefully better deterrent after the other nights incident. But then as DH said, when we were robbed, it was mid day (our mailbox had no door and we were lazy getting mail for like 4 days so they may have thought we were away), it's unlikely these petty thieves are looking for confrontation and going to do anything when they know people are home.

you can get camera/light security systems that link back to your personal computer for really cheap. My DH is always finding them on his deal websites (dealnews, woot, etc). If you want to spend more, an alarm system is probably the way to go.

Also, may as well get a lock box for your valuables inside. We have one that is fireproof and we put all of our birth certificate/Social security/passport documents in there along wtih some cash and any other valuables.

Yikes!

I have always heard that sound is the biggest deterrent - can you get an alarm system?

Probably neither, I'd put up a camera.

Fully lighted area would prevent me from coming back to your home after casing it.

We've been robbed before (weekday afternoon bright daylight) and no one was home but my crated puppy. Since then we haven't gotten an alarm or anything thinking it was so unlikely for something to happen again. But there was some sketchy sh!t going on right in front of my house last night at like midnight. We're in a pretty rural area on a side street that no one needs to go by unless they live there where people have 2+ acre lots all around me so it's not like anyone just goes walking around. There's no street lights so it's pretty dark.
Now that I've set the scene... after yesterdays incident, I want better lighting around the house. If you were up to no good, would you be more deterred by a fully lighted area that just had lights on, or by a motion sensor light that you triggered?
