@Mrs. Lion: no. Our school follows the French terror alert warning levels and in light of what has happened over the last 2 years, they consider that the school could be a target. I feel like it's more symbolic than anything since one person is not going to be able to stop a person or group with nefarious intentions.

Daycare you have to be buzzed in and the teacher comes to greet and take the kid in the morning or walk the kid to the parent in the afternoon.

Elementary for DS has an armed military soldier posted at the entry gate. There is also a security pavilion at the entry gate where you have to show ID and state your reason for entering the school grounds (when it's not drop off or pick up). We also found out they do at least 3 emergency drills per year.

The front door is locked and you must be either buzzed in by the receptionist or use your keyfob. I've had someone I don't know try to follow me in when the receptionist was away from her desk and I had the awkward task of asking them to buzz in. Turns out this person was a visiting therapist with no key fob so I asked her to wait for the receptionist to come, to which she responded "but I'm legit!". It was the most awkward conversation!

Each parent gets a proximity card for the daycare and we're not supposed to let anyone in with us. Otherwise, visitors have to get buzzed in. We have a separate proximity card for the back door of the building itself, or we can go in through the main entrance where there's a security guard.

Daycare, we have to be buzzed in.

Elementary, the doors lock when the school day starts. There is a bell to ring to be buzzed in. The office is right inside the doors and you go to the office to sign in. You have to sign in with photo ID (which is scanned). And if you aren't a registered volunteer with a background check on record you don't get beyond the office during a standard school day. To attend any event during the school day, you must have a background check.

Until last week, there was no security other than cameras. At the start of this new school year, they have locked all of the doors and you can only enter through the office. We love our school but it did make me nervous. It is in a church, and there were about 10 different entrances people could come in. The classrooms were not locked. I feel better now with just the one entrance even though that is not locked.

The daycare the kids go to has a keypad and the office/desk are right by the door.

The elementary school I worked at had no real security, except that the exterior doors were locked during the day, except one front door. The office was also by the front door, and staff were all expected to stop any person who was in the hall without a visitor sticker displayed.

We were in a safe area and it never occurred to me to worry about security. I'm still really not worried. I am sure my kids' elementary school will have a similar setup and I am totally fine with that.

LO's preschools have both been in church basements, so you can walk right in. They are coops, though, so there are lots of parents there.

DD's new school also runs all day baby/toddler classes, so it has two sets of glass doors that operate with a button into a manned reception area. Since the doors are electronically controlled, I assume they could be locked with a push of a button as well.

At her old school (DD2's new school), the doors are locked except at drop off and pick up, and then the door is manned by the directors. They have a fully internal courtyard playground, and the windows are separated from the sidewalk by a deep and wide trench (that's just building design I think, not intentional) and there is a security fence - I think the HVAC units are down there.

Ours is in a federal building, so it's total overkill. Show a badge to get in the parking lot (visitors get their car searched), badge in at the building entrance, all items go through the X-ray machine, badge in to the daycare. Security guards at the building entrance and inside the daycare. Apparently some parents think there are not enough cameras between the building entrance and the parking lot?!

It's a secure building. You have to have an electronic keyfob to get in and all spaces are camera monitored and fenced. It is also monitored routinely (hourly) by our campus security guards.

What kind of security does your LO's school have?

We went to her open house last night and I noticed there is no key pad entrance like there was at her last school. The office to the school isn't even directly in front of the main doors, so anyone could just walk in at any time...so it seems. I hope they have some other sort of security in place that I'm just not aware of yet. I would totally help pay for a security guard to work there full time!
