I had a single OB and he was there for both of my deliveries. I never waited long and liked that I always saw him at my appointments.

I had a single OB the first time, and a different single OB this pregnancy.
For my first pregnancy, he had 1 person that was on call for him on weekends - every other weekend. I went into labor on a weekday so he delivered my baby.
This pregnancy, my doctor has a backup that you are welcome to have a pre-natal appointment with so you can get to know her. I am not 100% familiar with how his backup schedule works but I'm going to do my best to delivery when he's working ;)

I have had both and I preferred the group. Less wait times and chance to have different opinions. I had an OB with DD2 who delivered over 95% of his patients but I wouldn't say he had less patients! He was very busy, wait times for regular appointments were crazy long because he was often gone for deliveries/surgeries.

He added someone late into my pregnancy so I saw her for normal check ups but I feel like she didn't have the full picture and she introduced herself to me every time she saw me which was 3-4 times within two months. And then my OB delivered my daughter but when I went for my follow up, he didn't bother to check me out which I thought was very weird because I actually brought her to the appt!

I had straight forward normal pregnancies and deliveries so I don't think I'm the right patient for a single OB! I want to have care and get in and get out!

I chose a group for this reason, but after being on bed rest for 6 weeks, I realized that there was no guarantee my OB would be there. It was a group of 6 woman OBs and they all each had certain days that they were on-call.

I got to know my 6 OB in my office very well. When it came close to delivering, I was able to ask them their preferences. Luckily, all of them fit my minor requirements (breach extraction of twins if twin be turned).

While I was in the hospital, I have heard there are offices where the OB will come no matter what. I guess that's a good thing but how does that OB ever have time to take days off or vacation. I guess I would say that's a dedicated OB to do that.

The OB that delivered my twins was not the OB I saw but I really liked the two OBs that were on-call during my induction weekend. My goal was healthy twins so I didn't have a lot on my birth plan.

@Mrs. Lion: Ah, gotcha.

NaPro is well known for it's support of progesterone throughout pregnancy (for sustaining it early on, and to help with preterm labor). So far my levels are good enough that I'm avoiding shots. They do NOT sound pleasant!

It's too late for a pre-conception appointment

The new doctor worked me on for Friday (7w5d) after I said I could NOT wait until 10.5 weeks because of anxiety due to losses.

I've had both experiences.

With LO1 I had a group practice. I saw my regular OB the first 5 months and then they started rotating through the others so I could get to know them. I had never met the OB who ended up delivering my baby, but it really didn't matter to me. It was still a good experience and I didn't mind rotating through OBs. I also had a smooth, complication-free pregnancy/birth.

With LO2, I saw one OB. I looooved him, he always remembered me (and still does now that I see him for just annuals) and we had a great physician-patient relationship. Unfortunately, my 2nd baby came so quickly that he arrived at the hospital 10 minutes after the birth. He examined me though and stitched me up (just 2 stitches).

I don't think one is better than the other, and in both situations you have to be open to the possibility that something unexpected could occur.

@MaryM: My injections were later in the pregnancy to prevent preterm labor.I am not familiar with NaPro. Is that related?

It is definitely easier to find an OB pre-pregnancy. My doctor actually won't take patients that werent GYN patients, because her schedule is already too busy. Maybe you could set up a pre-conception appointment to meet him?

I see a single OB now, but last time I saw a group and the resident OB AT the hospital delivered me that I never met before anyway. To me it wasn't and still isn't a big deal.

I have a single OB who helped me 100% of the way from PCOS diagnosis to birth. He induced me at 7am on a Tuesday before going to work at his OB practice, and then came back for delivery at 7am the next day. Then at noon the next day, he did my postpartum follow-up.

He does his very best to be at every delivery whether or not he is "on call." He works 10 min away from the hospital and regularly visits 1-2x a day either before or after work and during lunch. He takes one vacation every year and is very clear about those dates with all of his patients.

I would ask the possible OB about what percent of his patients he delivers and what his procedures are regarding labor & delivery. Like, I had specific written directions about when to go to the hospital, when to text him about going into labor, and what to tell the hospital when I arrived. The hospital also called him.

@Mrs. Lion: Did you do NaPro as well? (wondering because of the progesterone injections)

I had thought I'd go to the old practice and give them the chance to tell me what they'd do differently. But then I think it would be harder to switch OBs in the middle of a pregnancy and get my records switched over. So I went ahead and called someone new.

I see just one doctor at my practice. She does regular gyn appointments so I have seen her for years. She did all my prenatal appointments, but as it turned out was out of town when I went into labor. I'm not sure what it would have been like if she was there for L&D, honestly, but I do still feel like I had great care despite her absence. My nurses were really the ones who mattered to me in the moment and they were incredible.

@MaryM: I would probably switch if I were in your shoes. If the bad memories are already affecting you, that might not get easier :( I think I could have had the opportunity to meet my OB's backup doctors if I had wanted to, and that might have made it a little easier. By the time I "went into labor" the second time I had already been through 20 weeks of progesterone injections and 8 weeks of all day long contractions. I was DONE haha :) Knowing my ob liked the drs was good enough for me. But had I had any concerns I am sure I could have dropped by their office to meet their midwives/obs.

@Mrs. Lion: His ratings (that I've seen) are incredible. My old practice had some that were 5 star, but there were always a few low ones and people always complained about the office staff.

I could deal with the office staff when I loved the doctors. But my favorite doctor has been out due to heart surgery, and one of the other highly rated ones is going on leave soon...so I feel like that just doesn't leave me with many good choices. Plus I just HATE going to that office after so many post-loss appointments there.

I had a single OB and my experience both times was incredible. I had very complicated and scary pregnancies, and having someone who knew me, nurses who were always available to talk on the phone without having to wait for a call back, and the predictability when I was in the office every week was really wonderful.

I was really worried about not having her do my c-sections (I had a breech baby both times) but in the end I decided that I trusted her so much that I trusted her judgement in choosing who would be her backup practice. The first time she was the one who was there, which was great because it was unexpected and 5 weeks early. The second time she was not the doctor on call. I could have waited until morning for her to be the one to do my surgery, but in the end I decided I was okay with the doctor on call doing it and it went very smoothly. She was in first thing the next morning (and every day after) to check on me, so aside from the surgery itself she was still my doctor. I am really happy with the way everything worked out and I would highly recommend it, assuming the single practice doctor is one you adore.

I've one ob for every pregnancy. This is my third pregnancy. My first ob retired from delivery, my second go married and moved out of state so now I'm on a new ob at the same office. They were the only person I saw my entire pregnancy. I loved knowing the dr. Knew me very well when it came time for delivery. I have not had any issues with them being out of town during my delivery but I know they do go out of town. Like this week my dr is on vacation so at my last appointment she told me all about the dr she chose to cover her patients while she is gone.

In the end I trust my hospital enough to know that I will be well taken care of even of my dr is not there.

Mine is kind of in between. My OB is part of a group, but I never saw any of the other OB's during my pregnancy. My OB office is located in the hospital I delivered at and someone from the group was always on call.

Of course I delivered 2 weeks early and my OB was on vacation. The on call OB did my delivery and it was totally fine. Prior to having my son, my OB and I went over my preferences so they were all in my file and the on call OB was able to see all that.

Would you be able to find out who the OB's are that are on call at the hospital you will be delivering at? Maybe you could set up a "just in case" meeting?

I went to a group with 5 OBs, but still saw only my main OB for every appointment up until the very end (when I started weekly appointments in the third tri, they made it a point to introduce me to the others, "just in case.") As it turns out, my OB was on vacation when DS born, and the doctor who delivered him was the only one I hadn't met, but she still did a fabulous job.

I technically went through a group of CNMs, but I didn't really rotate through them - I saw a handful during my first pregnancy and I only saw one during my second pregnancy. Both times, it was a different midwife that I'd never met who delivered my boys. It didn't really matter to me!

I had a group practice for my first pregnancy and a single OB for my second. I vastly preferred my second pregnancy experience. I really felt like I knew and trusted my OB. I had a VBAC though and it was hospital policy that my OB had to stay there until I delivered.

I've never had a single person, but I do work with a small group of CNM's. There are only three of them. I didn't like the lady who was on call through most of my labor last time, but she went off-duty about an hour before I delivered and I ended up with my favorite midwife.

Anyone care to share their experiences working with a single OB instead of a group?

I've worked with a group in the past, and I liked that I knew someone would always be on call and I would know who was delivering my baby.

I fear with a single doctor that he could end up on vacation and I have to deal with a stranger? But I also figure, one OB has fewer patients than five OBs so maybe the odds are higher that I have someone I like do the delivery? (There was one doctor at the old practice I could not stand).

If you have a single OB, were they there for the actual delivery?

If you've had both single/group, which did you prefer and why?

ETA: The new doctor is also at a different hospital than where I had my daughter (big pro so I won't have as much PTSD going there) and a new women's center recently opened in the one he delivers at. Those seem like major pros.
