Any hobbies you've ever wanted to take up? I knit and crochet and to have a whole day to sit and crochet and watch (or listen) to tv sounds like heaven!

@Hypatia: this might be a silly question, but if you can’t move your fast day, is there a reason you can’t move the self care day to day Saturday?

@hellobeeboston: yes to everything you posted! I'm all for the 90 minute classes too - pretty sure I can feel my stress just melting away and leaving me in a puddle of bliss

But yes, I too struggle with the juggle of work, kids and home life and yoga seems to be the first thing that goes. I seem to prioritise gym workouts because I feel that will help with my other quest of regaining shape but I think deep down I know if I just did yoga everything else would fall into line.

Also, how great are bookshops with a good drink! I'm dairy free at the moment so I don't do that much spontaneous coffee anymore but I could easily while away a day doing some post-yoga reading

This post is inspiring me...

@Nutella: oh I just saw your response after I posted. I'm SO with you right now, my constant battle is how to fit MORE yoga into my life and it's hard with my full time job out of the house, 2 hour commute and 2 kids & husband!

I would definitely do a 90 minute yoga class - if you're more looking to relax do restorative. If you're looking for a workout, do power, but maybe not while fasting....

After yoga I'd head to a bookstore and browse the shelves and maybe have a cup of tea (no sugar or dairy & you're OK with your fast right?)

Or, I'd go do something creative. Go to a museum, or go do a class - learn how to knit, cross-stich, embroider, paint, draw, sculpt, etc etc...

and not sure about where you live, but now that it's getting nice out I'd try to get outdoors if possible. An easy hike, or sit outside and work on something fun, or the beach, or a lake, whatever you like to do.

@Hypatia: I know you said no vigorous exercise but I would completely recommend a restorative yoga class if I had all this time on a regular basis. Either yin yoga or anything nice and gentle. It is heavenly and makes a world of difference for me whenever I do it, I always wish I could do it more and more! The eternal struggle for more yoga, haha. Enjoy whatever you end up choosing to do - sounds so great!

Going to assume the library is probably closed on Sunday. So maybe try going to The hardware store and buy some seeds/plants to start a garden? That way you’ll have some fresh produce and something to do every Sunday.

What do you like to do? If you like to read or watch movies, I would find a library or bookstore that has a comfy seating area, then you can read or watch your phone/iPad.

If the weather is warm, do the same thing with a picnic blanket or camp chair at a nice park or someplace.

Maybe some kind of class too? Want to learn to sew or speak a language, or something like that?

And absolutely second having hubby take the kids out of the house!!

The no-food part is tricky just because stopping in a coffee shop is always a good way to buy yourself a chunk of time. I'm not sure what I would do with 8 glorious hours, but here are some ideas

-sit in a scenic area. Bring a book, a scetch book, journal, knitting, whatever you enjoy doing. With that amount of time you could even drive an hour or so away to a nice destination
- if Sunday is your rest day, could you do a gentle mindfulness yoga class?
- I find organizing relaxing and gratifying. If I have a chunk of time to myself i will tackle a discrete task like a closet or dresser.
- volunteer for something that you will find energizing and fulfilling

@Hypatia: report back after a few weeks with what you've been doing and how you feel!

I'd also see if there is something your partner could do with the kids that is out of the home, so that you can just be home alone to do whatever (NOT clean). I have never fasted for that long unless I Was desperately ill, so I"m not sure about energy levels but would a gentle walk be too much? You could look into lectures at local universities, museums, etc., or take some kind of craft/building class.

My birthday routine when I lived in Boston was always to take the day off work and go to the Museum of Fine Arts and spend all day there. Between art itself, the gift shop, and a little wine stand they have, it was the perfect day.

@Hypatia: Is it an option for your spouse to take the kids and you stay home? If so I’d SLEEP!!!! Netflix. Maybe hot bath. Read trashy magazines. But mostly sleep.

My DH and I are taking turns having a self-care day on Sunday from around noon until 8 PM. However, that’s the day that I fast for 36 hours (beginning at 8 PM the night before). I considered trying to move it, but it’d be really inconvenient (it’s tied to my rest day at the gym, etc.). So, whatever activities I choose, they can’t involve food. And I don’t want to be AROUND food, like at a coffee shop. Since it’s my rest day and I’ll be a little fatigued from fasting, I don’t want to go on a hike, either.

I looked online for other ideas, but so many involve beauty routines. I just recently had my hair cut, so that’s out. I’m honestly not into pedicures, makeup trials, etc. I don’t enjoy shopping. I can’t do a massage because of nerve damage.

The only thing I can think of is seeing a movie, but there aren’t any that really interest me right now, and there will be such a strong aroma of popcorn that I’m not sure it’d be all that fun.

Do you have any other ideas? If you could spend eight hours alone under these circumstances, what would you do?
