In some states, you can only get STD through your employer. That's the case where I live and my employer doesn't offer it, so I was unable to get STD.

Yeah, it's strange. Everyone I have contacted (Aflac, e-supplemental) said they only go through groups. I can get short term disability through e-supplemental but it only gives maternity coverage if there is a problem with the pregnancy / delivery, not if it's just regular maternity leave.

@dagret: Yes, I did know about the 10 month thing. I'm not pregnant yet but hope to be soon! :)

@Muggle Born: That is odd cause my friend has it and got a check when she was out on maternity leave. She now has a different job, essentially self employed, and still has it. I know cause she said that will be her only maternity leave with #2.

Not sure if you know this, but most short term disability plans have 10 month exemption periods for maternity leave - you can't buy it when you're already pregnant.

Any other input? I am curious too! I thought Aflac did work with individuals though?

I'm self-employed and looking for short term disability insurance to provide some financial relief when I am on maternity leave. I called AFLAC and they only work with employers / groups. My husband's work doesn't offer anything for me. Anyone know of any other insurance plans that would help? Thanks!
