I didn't let LO fuss much at all when she was a newborn. She was a very easy baby and Never cried, if she was fussy it was because something was wrong.

@swedishfish: same for us!
I read bringing up bebe that discussed this and how important if was right from the start so we always waited 30 seconds before going to her.

@swedishfish: I had not read that book, but based on your description, I think I ended up doing that too! I'm curious if that's the reason our babies are so easy going or if they are just naturally that way which led to that method working out for us!

In the middle of the night I'll let her go until she has a real cry. She starts out by making noises, and that either turns into a cry or she'll go back to sleep.

with my first LO, he didn't put himself to sleep alone until 18 months. I nursed/held him til he was asleep until then.

with my second, I've been let him fuss almost to crying before picking him up just about every time. he's a much better sleeper than his big brother was at this age, for sure. not sure if that's just his temperament or what though :)

@Adira: have you ever heard of the book Bringing Up Bebe? I read it a few months ago. The author wanted to know why French babies STTN so early compared to many American babies. French parents tend to pause and wait before picking up their babies to soothe them. Babies need to learn to connect their sleep cycles before a certain age or they will need you to soothe them back to sleep constantly. I ended up using the "French" way with R without even knowing it. I do think it helps that she's a fairly easygoing baby as well.

@swedishfish: Same!

And I don't know if that's why or not, but Xander has always been able to self soothe. I'm guessing he's just an easy baby though and not that anything we did taught him to self soothe early on.

Not sure exactly when, but it was after 6 months. I can't stand hearing her cry and neither can DH. It wasn't on purpose though. One day I was too tired to get right up in the MOTN to get her and after about a minute, she went right back to sleep. So ever since then we let her fuss for a little bit before running in. I actually notice now that running in there too soon distracts her and keeps her up way longer than just letting her fuss for a minute or two.

@ShootingStar: me too. I almost always let her fuss until she cries. Now that's she's older (6 months) it helps when I set her down to play when she would rather be held. She will fuss for a minute or two & then will play happily. As far as sleep goes, she still needs me to help her

Probably around 3 months. And only during the night - she can never put herself back to sleep if she wakes up during a nap.

I think mine was between 6-7 months, sadly. It was almost like it just didn't even occur to her to DO anything to help herself...

Pretty much all fussing I've always let go to full on crying. I don't let it escalate to hysterical though. Not sure if it's helped much with self soothing or not.

When did you start letting LO fuss/self-sooth to sleep? As a FTM I almost always jump up at the first squeak but wondering if I should let her fuss for a couple of minutes so she starts to learn to self-sooth.
