@shopaholic: i was wondering about swaddling weaning bc R loves to be swaddled. She found her hand recently and when that happened, i tried swaddling her hand up by her face. totally works and she's been putting herself to sleep by sucking on her hand! this just happened last week though (15 weeks). i am not going to swaddle wean until she flips back to front or her sleep takes a turn for the worse.

LO sleeps really well in the swaddle. She found her fist pretty early but she just sucks on her fingers during the day and when she's napping sometimes. She also grabs onto her ears when she's sleepy! I hope when we swaddle wean she'll just suck her fingers at night too. We might start swaddling with one arm out soon just to get her used to it.

ds found his hands fairly early but didn't really master self-soothing with thumb sucking or touchin ears until 10/11 wks. I cold turkey swaddle weaned at 12 weeks and he got the hang of self-soothing pretty quickly!

Hmm.. Ok. Will wait till she can start rolling over. It took 6 weeks to get her to be okay being swaddled so I'm not ready to swaddle wean! :)

one of the reasons we stopped swaddling was to give LO a better chance of self-soothing. his sleep became pretty horrible in the swaddle so we ditched it around 6 weeks. it didn't work like a charm, but i think that's just because LO just doesn't fall asleep that well, and he did learn to suck his thumb (so we don't have to constantly replace the pacifier, which was getting really exhausting).

I also agree that if she is doing well in the swaddle (sleeping well) I would NOT change it. We only swaddle weaned when LO stopped sleeping well in it, and since we were going to try to sleep train, I felt like he had to have access to his hands to self soothe. He doesn't use his hands now, however...he cuddles with his blanket instead.

LO was swaddle weaned before she learned how to self-soothe. And now she's not attached to any object nor is she a hand/thumb sucker. she just learned how to go to sleep. If K is doing well in the swaddle, I would seriously think hard about swaddle weaning now.

I'm all on-board with getting K to master some self-soothing skills. Things have already gotten a lot better since she's been able to find her fist!

Question though... how can the baby self-soothe, with a fist, pacifier, lovey, whatever, if he/she is swaddled? Do they have to be swaddle-weaned before self-soothing?
