You’ve all given me some great ideas. I’m starting to lean toward passing down DD1’s convertible seat and buying her a harnessed booster.

We have a Diono and Britax as a back-up seat, I far prefer the Diono. The lower profile sides just make it easier. My son is big for his age and he looks uncomfortable when we use the Britax, granted the Diono is specifically marketed for its high weight/height limits. The Diono is a beast, it take up sizable room when rear facing but the safety and other features far outweigh the space constraints in the passenger seat.

I also vote for chicco next fit zip. We've had many many many unfortunate puke accidents and i'm a pro at dismantling and washing the zip. There are still nooks and crannies, but the cover pops off/on so easily.

Also just FYI, chicco just came out with the MyFit harnessed booster. I had already purchased a graco transitions for my daughter who is three (we needed a narrow seat), but I"m seriously considering storing that for travel and buying the chicco. It looks so nice and has features that the graco lacks (a nice tightening mechanism/button/easier latch/multiple recline settings). I only paid $20 for the graco at a ridiculous Toys r us sale so I can't complain, but I'm quietly complaining. Ha.

I'm a big fan of the Graco Extend2Fit. We have two. It's not too large front to back so it fits fine in our Camry. You can also rear-face up to 50 pounds. It seems comfy and high-quality. And I thought the two cupholders were kind of weird at first, but my son loves them. He keeps his water bottle and small toys in them!

ETA: Also, after a fiasco involving a blueberry nutrigrain bar, we put the little seat pad into the washing machine and it came out good as new. That wasn't the full cover, just the extra bit of removable padding, but they're made out of the same fabric.

Helpful review: https://csftl.org/graco-extend2fit-review/

I have a Clek Foonf and a Diono Radian. I think they are both fine--no complaints, they are sturdy, they are narrow. Kids like them find. The Cleks have a fabric that are very easy to clean.

Love the Chicco Nextfit (when I got it the zip version didn't come out). I would def have gotten the zip version if it was available; BUT we've had that for almost 3 years and never had to clean it (knock on so much wood).

I also vote to switch DD1 and pass down the seat. That's what we did shortly before DD1 turned 3. We got her a Graco Nautilus and we've been super happy with it.

We had Maxi Cosi Prias and we hated them so much after a while we bought Nextfit Zips which we LOVE. I've only had to take the cover off once to wash (there's probably a way to do it without taking the seat out of the car, but DD1 and DD2's seats are nestled pretty close together) and it wasn't quite as simple as I would have guessed, but still easier than our old ones.

Not sure about the size, but they do seem smaller than the Maxi Cosi for sure and the seat does fit with DD2's infant seat right next to it.

@LemonJack: if your oldest is forward facing I agree it makes the most sense to pass the convertible seat down and get a combination seat for your oldest.

The britax frontier is a great seat, we will likely get one for my DD because she is a giant. But if your DD is small you likely won't need the high limits of the seat. (Nothing wrong with using it though! You could just look at other combination seats too!)

A forward facing convertible seat and a combination seat in harness mode are equally safe. (Assuming a child meets the limits of either seat)

@LemonJack: oh and the seatbelt installation is so easy- I have never had a seat be so rock solid before and it takes like a minute. We never even took the latch connectors out because the seatbelt is so easy.

@LemonJack: she was 3.5 and is fairly short for her age. Basically any kid who is forward facing in a convertible could fit in it. She’s 4 now and this reminded me k need to move the crotch buckle forward a bit. It’s very easy to adjust the harness height and crotch buckle. I wasn’t concerned about the size so much but now I realize with two pretty big seats it’s almost impossible to fit anyone else in the back with them. Like I have squeezed myself between the seats for a super quick drive and I can’t put both butt cheeks down. If you had a third row it wouldn’t be an issue.

@Foodnerd81: I just looked up the Fontier. How old was your LO when you got it? DD1 will be close to four when the switch happens, but she’s a peanut. The Frontier makes me a little nervous for a kid her size.

@SweetiePie: I love that the cover zippers off! That’s a huge selling point. And they are basically never moved, so heaviness isn’t a factor.

@LemonJack: @SweetiePie: I have the normal nextfit, not zip, and it sucks to take the cover off to wash it. Luckily I have only had to do it a couple of times for puke and it is such a pain. If you have a kid who ever gets carsick pay up for the zip!

@LemonJack: Nextfit is awesome - super easy install, very comfortable (my son didn’t love his infant seat but the Nextfit he was clamoring to get in). If you get the zip the cover literally zippers off. It’s great.
It is heavy, but if it’s not moving around between cars it doesn’t matter. We have a separate lighter weight one we keep for travel.
If my first is still in his when the new one is old enough for a convertible, I will get another, hands down.

@LemonJack: could you get DD1 a combination seat (forward facing harness to high back booster, like a Britax frontier)? And then hand the boulevard down to the baby? That’s what we did and so far it seems to make sense.

We have a Chicco nextfit for our convertible. I like t fine- installing is very easy, adjusting the shoulder straps are easy. But it’s big and heavy and bulky. I like the high rear facing limit- I don’t know any 2 year olds who have maxed out the height rear facing before their parents were ready to turn them. My 2 year old still has tons of room but she’s very little anyway.

For our combo seat I like the Britax frontier and it is so easy to install, but it’s huge and expensive. I’m not sure if it was worth the extra money but we only have one of each seat so the cost wasn’t as much of a blow as if we’d needed t for two cars.

We’ll need to get DD2 a convertible car seat in the next couple months, and I’m looking for recommendations. Both DH and I have a car seat in our vehicles, so we’ll be buying two of the same one. DD1 has a Britax Boulevard and it’s fine. I’m considering buying that again, but one thing I dislike about it is that it’s so big! It is comfortable though, and she likes it.

I want one with a cover that’s easy to remove and clean (machine washable) and would prefer one that’s not quite as big, but that’s not a deal breaker.

What kind do you have and why would you recommend it?
