@psw27: me too! I have 3 kids in daycare and while my oldest is fairing pretty well my younger two have a snotty nose every other week literally. My middle guy especially will have a pretty snotty nose(usually green) for a week, goes away and then seems like it comes back the next week. He has absolutely no other symptoms but if so I don't hesitate to take them to the doctor. I've spent plenty of co pays on the maybe it's an ear infection.....

I had no idea preschool was so different from daycare. DD is in the 1-2 yo room at her daycare and they have a very lax bar for sending kids home. Runny noses are a constant, in all colors of the rainbow. I'd be very shocked if someone every told me DD had to go home because of the color of her snot.

If I kept my kid home for every snotty nose, I would lose my job. If the snot was a scary/unusual color - I would take him to the doc cause that "can" be a sign of infection but usually it is nothing.

Just wanted to update, not that it's that big of a deal :silly:
When I picked him up they said he was perfectly fine and they considered his mucous to be clear.
I think the rule is more of solid/opaque/dark yellow/green mucous. This was the first time I was unsure so I'm glad I took him because now I know what the rule interprets as for them.

I think because I am a rule follower I probably worried about it more than I should have/most parents would.

@SweetiePie: Our doctor has expressed several times that the color of mucus is not directly related to infection vs. no infection. There are so many factors, so I think that rule is a bit vague (and not accurate). I would ask them to revise their policy, or "prove" that there is actual evidence to support it.

If my kid had no other symptoms (like fever, bad cough, wheezing), and seemed ok, I would send them to school.

That said, our school is strict about symptoms, and if you send your kid to school with symptoms on the list, they will be sent home immediately.

@pwnstar: fair point. I meant I would be more likely to bring her with a cold to preschool, than say a friends house where the kids hadn't been exposed to the same germs already. But I certainly wouldn't extend that logic to a stomach bug or lice or something more serious. I will even keep her home for a bad cough since coughing sprays the germs so much, but a runny nose is just a part of winter.

I'd send. Heck my two year old is in daycare full time. Last week daycare sent me a picture of her with snot running down her face (while playing outside) and she doesn't even currently have a cold! I couldn't imagine keeping my kids home every time they had a runny nose.

@Truth Bombs: ok got it. I think I misread the last sentence. ETA: I also was explaining why I think the school rule is a little silly.
I'm usually a stickler for rules (to the point that its probably annoying to some) which is why I came to ask the question. If majority of responses were to keep him home I wouldn't even bother. But since most seem to think it's ok I'm going to let the teacher decide. I'll make it perfectly clear that I know the rule but why I think he's ok and if they tell me to turn around and take him home I will. If they call me to get him I will. But this is a rule that I think isn't cut and dry which is why I want the rule makers to make the final decision.

@SweetiePie: I didn't say yellow means he has an infection. I I said the school's rule is keep him home unless its clear and since you don't have to go to work or something, it's easy enough to follow the rule.

@Foodnerd81: By that logic, no one should ever be required to keep their kiddos home if it is likely that they acquired a bug at daycare/school. Makes perfect sense.

@MenagerieMama: yes was just saying that when you replied. It does annoy me because yellow snot can mean many things. But I also don't want them to be pissed at me.

@pwnstar: @Truth Bombs: yeah I guess the color doesn't make me worry too much because it's not an accurate indication. You can google yellow snot and most things say it's a misconception that yellow means infection all the time. It's morning so yellow can just mean it's old snot. Or they turn yellow when they progress later in the cold.
He has no fever and is in a great mood. It's streaks of light yellow within clear.

I'm going to take him and just tell the teachers what's up. I'm a 5-10 minute walk away so I'll tell them to call me if they observe a little while and feel I should come get him.

The color of mucous means nothing by itself in regards to infection. So that rule would really irritate me and I would fight it with some evidence! That and LO has a runny nose most of winter. So I would go.

I think people at day care are a lot more understanding of kids going to school with a cold because the parents can't miss work every time their child has a runny nose. But since you wouldn't have to miss work to keep him home, I would follow the rules since he's not all clear.

@PinkElephant: I agree with that. If he had a constant stream I would def leave him home. It's more like you can tell he needs to blow his nose and if you leave it long enough it'll run. It's definitely not constant. Maybe 1-2 nose-wipes/blows an hour? And sneezing is actually nonexistent so far today.

I think I'll send him.

Probably yes (I'd send him). I might NOT send him is if there's a pretty constant snot flow/sneezing (and someone would have to be wiping his nose a lot). For a slightly older child (4 ish) who can take care of wiping on their own, I don't think a cold should be a big deal at all.

So, my son is in Preschool 4 mornings for 2 hours.
They said during orientation that the rule is "if it's clear let them come. If it's yellow/green keep them home" referring to their mucous.
He's like a mix of clear and yellow. It's definitely not like solid yellow and opaque or anything. And he's 100% fine. Just a little sneezy and runny, but same cheerful demeanor. No fever. No cough.
It's day 4 of his cold.

Would you send? Of course I want to because that's some precious time to myself, and he loves it and seems fine. But I don't want to be the a-hole disobeying rules and getting everyone sick (though I'm sure he got it from school anyway so, whatever).
ETA: he's rarely sick that's why I'm not really sure what to do! Somehow this kid has had so few colds I could count them on my fingers.
