Can you take to your Daycare provider ahead of time? Let them know that your having bottle issues and ask them what they will do/wont do if LO is refusing the bottle while in their care... maybe they can offer some techniques to try

it took my LO till she was 6 months before she would take a bottle from me - otherwise someone else had to feed her

I have been back at work over a week now. Baby (5m) took the occasional bottles during my leave, but oddly enough after the first few times that dad fed him, usually I would be the one giving them and I think I was more persistant. Because the first day I left him more than a couple hours with his dad, he refused the bottle and screamed for two hours straight! Then for the first week or so, he'd drink maybe an ounce or two, working up to 4 ounces the entire time I was gone. Added to the stress was I am away at bedtime, and I nurse to sleep. I tried the week before I went back to do little mini boot camps, for a few hours in the afternoon or at bedtime other nights and the memory seems now like unnecessary trauma and stress and worry my last precious days with him. By my 6th shift, he drank 4 bottles while I was gone! I don't know if he needed the practice to get to that point so what I did the week before helped or not.

But in hindsight, I would have tried to relax and enjoy my time while making sure to try two small bottles each day. I wasted so much milk on bottle practice! Now that he seems to have gotten the hang of it I am worried I won't be able to pump enough to keep up. He's a big big boy!

@yellowbird: DD2 would NOT take a bottle from anyone at home. Not me, not daddy, not nil, not FIL. I was really worried she would starve the first few days. But first day of daycare she took all her bottles no problem.

Yes, I'd suggest the boot camp with your DH giving bottles and maybe you being out of the house if possible. I think that's your best chance of getting him to take it.

@yellowbird: He won't starve in a few hours. I had to go nurse at my lunch break for the first week or two also. He started doing ok with the bottles and then we figured out he was actually refusing the bottle to hold out for lunch time nursing. So that is when I stopped going at lunch and sure enough he started taking the bottles.

We found he liked the MAM nipple best. Its different than any other bottle we found. Wide Base, flattened tip, and a short tip. We packed the milk in those bottles but also sent a few other brands that daycare could try if they wanted.

@yellowbird: she reverse cycled, and I started feeding her at lunch every day because I was worried she'd dehydrate not eating all day every day of the week. She has an iron will. She's two now, and she would still not eat any solids and nurse all the time if I would let her, lol.

This week I sent my non-bottle taking girl to daycare. She did great way better than I was expecting! We did everything to get her to take a bottle and she refused (even for my mom when we were gone for 7 hours) but she does just find at daycare. They make sure to give it to her before she gets too upset and rub her cheek and she gives in. It takes awhile (45 minutes to finish 4 oz) but she does it! Our lady says she's getting better and better, I think a lot of it has to do with it not being at our house, we are going to continue doing bottles this weekend so she doesn't lose it.

@Corduroy: glad she finally got the hang of it. Working just seems so stressful when I will be thinking about how my baby is starving

@Smurfette: we might try the boot camp tomorrow!

@Rockies11: omg, she never took one? Is she reverse cycling at all?

We just sent my LO to daycare without having taken a bottle, because she would starve herself for 12 hours straight rather than take a bottle. I hope the daycare ladies would be skilled enough to get her to eat. She never did take a bottle, ever. They eventually got her to take milk by spoonfeeding it to her.

We did a bottle boot camp the weekend before my LO started day care. I would pump and DH would feed her. It would take an hour but she finally took it. Then it took a couple weeks at day care before she got the hang of it.

He will take the bottle. It took mine 2 full days without drinking (plus attempting for month on maternity leave) but by day 3 she was fine. I felt better after talking to the pediatrician and daycare. They were both clear LO would eat when she was ready. As long as milk was being offered they were on board with sending her.

They were talking about this today at the BF group I go to-the other moms said their babies had to go a long stretch (one went all day) before taking a bottle. Like they kept waiting for mom to show up and just had to be really hungry

I think daycare providers are very good at getting babies to take bottles- this definitely won't be the first baby they've ever had who refuses.

One thing to check is to make sure you don't have high lipase in your milk, which can cause a sour/soapy taste and can cause baby to refuse the bottle. If you're okay with doing it, taste a small amount of your milk a couple days or even a couple hours after expressing. The time lag is different for every mom with high lipase, but if this does end up being your issue, you can scald the milk right after you pump it. A mom I know was able to do this at work with a little portable heating device (can't remember exactly what it was called).

He might do better with someone else (daycare provider) giving him the bottle than with you... and, once we gets hungry enough, he'll take it. Try not to worry about it too much!

:( I've tried everything under the sun to get him to take a bottle. He even faked me out and took about an ounce one time but that was weeks ago.

Did anyone have to do this? Will he eat when he gets there? Is it a good idea to do a bottle boot camp tomorrow and just pump all day and have Dh give bottles? The pediatrician seemed to think maybe he would have to skip a feed before he was hungry enough to take one.
