I consider the email to the friend a "cover letter".
When I get those from friends, I forward them along to the hiring manager and it is the same as a cover letter.

I've worked many different places and passed on resumes and never even thought about a cover letter.
And I've passed my resume through colleagues and never included a cover letter.
I've been under the impression that those are a bit dated, so never worry unless it's expressly asked for. Maybe in certain fields it's more of an expectation (like law, for example).

i would always include a cover letter - that way your friend could write their own email and forward both attachments. obviously still make your initial email professional as well.

At the company I work, the professional email can be the cover letter. We only ask for resumes through our portal but a professional email/cover letter passed on by your referral/former coworker with the resume should help.

I would ask your friend - my company uses a portal where I copy and paste their resume - no need for anything else.

If you have a professional email that you're sending it with, that covers everything you'd put in a cover letter anyway, I don't think you need a separate cover letter. When I have job hunted in the past, I didn't send a cover letter as a separate document if I was emailing my application, the email IS the cover letter

eta it prob depends on your industry. I've worked in academic, policy research, non-profit fields, so not at all corporate

Layoffs at work are forcing me to job hunt a few months before I planned. I'm in a good spot and a have a large network of friends/associates in my field but I am far outside of my comfort zone.

A few former colleagues have offered to submit my resume to their companies for an open positions -- which is awesome.

Do I attach a cover letter with my resume or does an email to the former colleague count as the cover letter? My contacts are all manager level, like me. The emails I'm writing are professional in nature and cover the material found in cover letters.
