Your baby is what is called "late pre-term", not technically a premie. Follow your pediatricians recommendations, but there are no real guidelines on this issue.

Here's the seminal article on late-preterm. Notice that it gives no post discharge recommendations. http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/120/6/1390.long

@LemonLong: LO was also IUGR, he was 4lb, 4oz at birth.

We got the same advice, to keep him home and restrict visitors until his due date.

He was breathing on his own at birth, he was classified a feeder and grower but had no other complications other than a slight bout of jaundice.

Hopefully he will do okay in daycare!

My son was born at 34w4d and spent 10 days in the nicu- he went to daycare when he was about 16 wks old ( I was off for 12 wks and then my mom, dh and his mom traded off for another month). We have always been in big daycare centers and he had a cold when he was 5 mos but other than that was pretty healthy in the first year. Most of his illnesses were after he got mobile around 10/11 months and after that. His ped just recommended we restrict access and be really careful until shortly after his due date, he actually didn't seem to think that he'd have a compromised immune system in the long term. I think much if that depends on the baby's lung function at birth- if he didn't have any troubles breathing then he has healthy lung reserves to fall back on in times of sickness and its not as much of a concern I think. If he was on a ventilator or cpap, then would need to try to avoid daycare then.

My LO was born at 38 weeks, so not a preemie but had IUGR. She was 4 lbs 11 oz when she came home. She went to daycare at 12 weeks (she was still small, about 10 lbs) in the middle of winter. We've had 1 incident where she got sick and had a fever but otherwise it hasn't been bad. She's breastfed so I think that may be helping.

My daughter was born at 34w5d and spent 10 days in the NICU. I took off work 16 weeks (that was the max amount of time I could take and still keep my job). She started at a home daycare which I thought was good but we ended up having so many problems out of them (that's another story), but she only got 1 cold within the two months she was there. She starts an actual daycare center Monday and I'm hoping she doesn't catch every germ possible.

She also received the synagis shot which I believe helped her tremendously.

She's been great though! I was really worried at first, but it hasn't been bad.

ETA: I think it's so much worse and more germy at daycares in the winter. I know there are germs year round, but I think more germs and illnesses get spread around during winter months.

You could go with a family daycare instead of a center so he is exposed to fewer other kids... but any way you do it, yes, you get germs from other kids.
I don't have a preemie, though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Has anyone sent their preemie to daycare?

LO was born at 35w3d and spent 8 days in the NICU. We are restricting visitors and being very diligent about hand washing and sanitizing all his bottles, pacifiers, etc.

I'll be home for 12 weeks though DH and I are discussing the possibility of me taking a year off. If I do go back to work, I want to prolong the time DS has at home before going to daycare to try to help his immune system as much as possible. I've always heard that kids come home sick with everything when they're in daycare and with him being a preemie, that terrifies me.

How old was your preemie LO when they went to daycare? Did they catch a lot of colds?
