The local Facebook mom's groups I'm on have people giving away the samples or sell formula for very little. My friend used gerber soothe and got most of her formula half cost that way too! It's just an added pain in the ass to track it down.

That, and the pediatrician samples we asked for andmy entire family signed up on the similac website for samples too. They sent these little sample cans thay are perfect for the diaper bag or short trips.

@Tanjowen: I'm curious how you got the samples? I've never had success. All we ever got was some coupon/checks from Similac and it was rather sporadic. Our pediatrician never gave out samples, although I didn't ask - maybe I should have.

We used the target up &up brand until 6 months. At that time we slowly tried switching over to regular over a 2 week period at our pediatricians advice. He was a little gassy but did fine. Our pediatrician said if it hadn't gone well we would have tried again at 9 months.

The only plus with staying with similac is you can get tons of free samples and liquid formula for trips, which the up &up brand didn't offer. once we went full formula, our cost per month on up&up was at max $275 a month and then slowly went down as LO got older.

At Target, the "normal" sized canister of Similac Sensitive is $24.99, the same size in the Up and Up brand is $16.99. If you have a red card, it's an additional 5% off. And it's often on cartwheel app for another 5% off as well. Or other sales like spend $100 get a $25 gift card. We stock up on it during those sales.

Up and Up makes an even bigger canister that lasts us just over a week (for $24.99). It's more cost effective than the name brand for us.

@msplatypus: Yes, our older is 3.5 yo. She was switched to whole milk at one with no issues. As a matter fact dairy is her favorite food group. Milk, yogurt, cheese - loves them all and eats them all the time.

Our younger is only 12 weeks, so we have a ways to go on formula with her.

We used the same brand and used the generic also. Target, Walmart, and CVS all have generics that we used interchangeably depending on what was on sale. She didn't do well on any other formulas we tried. We weaned to whole milk at 1 with no problems. Good luck!

Thank you for responding! Have you weaned off formula yet? If so did you have any problems going to milk or did you go to something different? @MamaG:

We use the same formula, switching formulas is hard on babies. We did it several times with our first.

If you want to stick with this formula, I'd recommend the Target Up and Up version of it. It's what we are using for #2. We used the name brand exclusively with #1.

Hi Bees! I'm a little worried my husband and I gave my baby a lactose intolerance. I was unable to breastfeed our baby and when we got desperate I sent my husband to the store to buy formula, we were both out of it and he bought Similac Sensitive, which is a milk based formula that is lactose free (and really bleeping expensive). We kept using it and are now at 15 weeks and would really like to switch (to something cheaper and with lactose so she can drink milk later). We tried once at 12 weeks and she was up all night screaming with horrible gas and we've been afraid to try again. We were doing a 1 to 3 ratio to ease her into the new formula. At this point we can't really afford to stay with the Similac and I'm afraid she is unable to ingest lactose. Does anyone have any suggestions?
