We just got a pack of 10 sponges from the $1 store this weekend and she loves them! They make great blocks.

You could also just fill a bin with objects that have different textures like: feathers, beaded necklace, sandpaper, piece of fur material, sponges, etc.

@Honeybee: I picked up a great tip from a kindergarten teacher I used to work with: buy a cheap vinyl tablecloth and a little broom and dust pan set and store them in your rice box. When your LO wants to play with it put it on a hard floor like tile or hardwood and put the table cloth down. It's easy to pick up and shake the contents back into the tub and your LO can help by using the small broom which is also good for teaching them responsibility and coordination.

I can't wait to do rice and bean boxes! We had a giant rice box in school that is seriously one of my favorite memories! A box of buttons was another favorite.

My guy is still too little for those things, so I made an egg carton with random things glued inside (I scrubbed it out first!).

Another thing he loves is cat food in the bowls. He loves to run his fingers through it. We practice putting it in and out of the bowl. He is better about it now that he is a year and not sticking it in h is mouth!

Included are: a silk flower pedal, a feather, a rock, pinto beans, a square of fleece, acorns, a ribbon, a silk leaf, a puff ball, and some coffee beans.

I did a rice box for DD when she was around 2. I put some cups and sand toys like shovels in there as well. Same as @Honeybee said.. it was a mess. But she loved it. I also let her help sweep up with a little dustpan and she also loved that.

@Bao: I think we'll do Little People toys so DS (10 months) can try it out too. I'm not sure he's old enough yet, so I'm also going to make him a discovery basket to play with.

I did a rice box with DD when she was about 22 months. I put plastic animal figurines in ig. She made such a mess! I was thinking about trying it agaun this week with beans instead of rice; she's now 31 months.

Has anyone ever made their own sensory box for LO? If so, what did you put in it and what age did you start letting them explore it?
