I would recommend the Pendragon series...also more Science Fiction than fantasy.

I taught 7th grade LA last year and my boys were really into the Origami Yoda series, Hatchet (and the sequels), City of Ember series, The Name of This Book is Secret series, Malice (and its sequel Havoc), Sidekicked (and its companion, Minion) and Bad Unicorn

Narnia? I know Holes was popular and I think it might be a series.

I was going to suggest the Giver too. There are 4 books in the series. A little dystopian with some fantasy elements. I remember reading the Giver in middle school so maybe just a little older than him.

The Giver is now a trilogy (the movie is out, too) and the Divergent series and Hunger Games are often popular. A lot of kids like The Alchemyst series, though that does have some magic in it. Hatchet is another by Gary Paulsen. Also, it's not a series, but Mike Lupica's books (sports!) are often a favorite.

Goodreads.com is an awesome spot to find books, too. Good luck!

@MamaChin: Is Goosebumps still a thing?? I loved those when I was 11 and they are definitely unisex!

I would not give YA stuff to an 11-year old nephew without running it by his parents. Our nephew is the same age btw. I'm a children's librarian and I would suggest perhaps the Big Nate books by Lincoln Peirce, the Shadow Children series by Margaret Peterson Haddix , or even some nonfiction about a topic he may be interested in (history, Lego, sports, whatever).

There's a trilogy by Connor Kostick called Epic that is good. Also, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Both of these are more sci/fi than fantasy.

If he's into dystopian then The Maze Runner is good. I also like this trilogy called The Fifth Wave (it's about an alien invasion). And there's this long series called The Brotherhood Chronicles. And Marie Lu has a trilogy called Legend.

And for more of a parent pleaser - The Giver and Hatchet are both classics.

I was thinking maybe Divergent too. I've heard that the 365 series (?? Whatever that is lol) is good too.

Thinking ahead for Christmas, I'd really like to get my nephew some books. He's read and doesn't like Harry Potter. I suggested Percy Jackson but he says he doesn't like "magic stuff". He's read and liked The Hunger Games. I'm not really familiar with YA stuff for boys, any suggestions?
