Oh and I should give her credit- she's a great night sleeper usually. She's been on a one wake up a night schedule for weeks and has STTN a couple of times. She usually falls asleep no problem motn.

@sslm: I nurse to sleep but she frequently wakes up- like even in my lap, not moving! It's like she doesn't want me to use crutches like than. Or I put her down and she wakes up or wakes up a few minutes later. Gah.

The problem with the stroller is we live on the third floor. The stroller is in the garage for the building, not really a great place to nurse to sleep :(

@Foodnerd81: hmmm. I would nurse her and then put her in the stroller. Are you not nursing to sleep?

@sslm: @beaker: I try this, I really do, but I can't get her to sleep. She's a slow eater, so basically she wakes up, eats, that's almost an hour, we have some quiet activity (lately he looking at me and cooing, things like that) then I swaddle her back up, rock her... And the half hour or more routine if rocking, bouncing, nursing again, commences. And that's the one I can usually get her to take, eventually. Maybe I am going too long? I don't know how to get her down any sooner.

@Kemma: we always swaddle, use white noise, and I usually sing. She rarely falls asleep in the stroller and never in carseat or swing. Wearing her I can usually get her to sleep for half an hour as long as I keep walking (which is what I did after posting- she slept for 30 minutes while I bought ice cream and wine!).

@looch: I know it will be a habit to break later but it is possibly the only thing keeping me sane these days. I need my ball!!

Honestly, I did whatever worked during the first few months.

DD pretty much made her own schedule and is now really predictable at 6 months.

That wasn't helpful lol -sorry!

When Sadie was tiny we lived by the EASY method (Eat, Awake, Sleep). It was rare that she went more than 1-1.5 between naps. We never waited until she was crying/fussing to put her down, but looked for her sleepy cues (eye rubbing, yawning, etc.). We have used white noise since we got home from the hospital, it became a sleep cue for her pretty quickly. We introduced a blankie at 3 months, and she loves that too!

All that being said -- every baby is different. Sadie was a notorious cat-napper and I thought I was going to go nuts, but she grew out of it. Just remember that things won't always be this way!!

No more than 45 minutes between the morning wake up and the first nap. Signs of sleepiness like yawning and rubbing eyes signal overtiredness and it is much more difficult to get them to sleep at that point.

GET RID OF THE BOUNCING BALL! Seriously, it might work wonders now, but you might be creating a habit that will be hard to break!

DD is ten weeks old, but we're still bed sharing, and her ability to sleep solo, even during the day, is relatively limited. I will usually bring LO to my chest after she's been fed and burped, and I will lay down with her. I'll stroke her head, sing quietly, and offer her paci - she is usually down within about ten minutes. I lay with her for at least 20 minutes before transferring her to her swing or bassinet, or else she'll spring awake, noticing she's no longer on me. If I'm able, I'll let her take her entire nap on me. She's on somewhat of a schedule, so her naps are relatively predictable around her feedings. She expects to sleep after most feeds, so its gotten easier to put her down.

On particularly fussy days, I will take her for walks to get her nice and sleepy. She seems to pass out quicker in the stroller, but sleeps more soundly when worn.

I am not qualified to give advice on naps (see my recent thread). :) However, I do remember that a month ago when CJ was 8 weeks, I wanted things to be more predictable re: timing and length of naps, and they simply just weren't. She slept when she was good and ready, wherever she felt like it. Most often that was on my lap after nursing, or in the carseat or sling while we were out and about. However, right around then she also started being a champ at sleeping at night - 6 hours at a stretch or more. I was happy to go with the flow for naps in trade for good nighttime sleep! Things in the morning have started regulating a bit more recently, where she's awake at 8/8:30ish, and back down for a morning nap around 10:30/11. Afternoons are still a crapshoot. So...I guess my advice is just do what works for you and C for now. Sending big hugs. And just when you think you can't take it any more, it will change (so says a wise yoga teacher I know). :)

@beaker: this!!!

At that age I was doing whatever it took to get her to sleep after 90 mins of being awake: stroller, carrier, car, whatever! You're still in survival mode.

@Foodnerd81: Time. Seriously that is all that helped. I read and tried everything (except CIO; it's not for us). 5.5 months was a huge turning point - he could flip to his tummy which helped a lot. Also, giving up on the idea that he ought to get X amount of sleep because it just made me more frustrated!

C will only nap when I want if swaddled and rocked to sleep. If I'm not near the swing, I have to rock him in my arms and then transfer him to the RnP once he's totally out. Have you tried a swaddle? He naps in the car too, but I just consider those bonus naps.

He naps in the morning for maybe 30-45 minutes. This isn't always a definite. He naps in the early afternoon for 2-3 hours. That's his big nap, the one I have to work at to get him asleep. He also takes an early evening nap for 30-45 minutes, and he'll do that easily in the swing.

Do whatever works!

You could try:

White noise or the radio
Pram, carseat or swing
Baby wearing
Singing to her
Some gentle activity during awake time so that she's both physically and mentally tired
Time outside during awake time
Put a tshirt or something that you've worn in the bassinet / crib with her
Lay down with her until she's asleep then quietly slip away

Hugs Mama but it will get better!

We had success with the 90 minute program. Basically, LO should never be awake longer than 90 minutes, regardless of how long they just slept. for example, they wake up at 7, you should be putting them down for next nap no later than 830, whether theyre up from a nap Or just woke up from a six hour nighttime stretch. The first few times you may feel ridiculous, and many people (ie grandparents) will complain that youre always putting LO to sleep, but for us it really worked!

C is 8 weeks old. Her naps are so unpredictable. It takes forever to get her down - like nursing for an hour, then she wakes up when I get near the cradle, bounce and rock for half an hour, and then if I'm lucky I can put her down. Then, she often wakes up 15 minutes later and needs to be bounced again. Then she might sleep for 45 minutes or 3 hours.

So please. What helps your infant sleep? Schedule, techniques, anything! Only 8 weeks so no CIO yet.
