@MarieJ: I fully weaned at 14 months, it was a gradual process of cutting out feeding sessions. I gradually cut out feeding during the day which was easy because she was at daycare for most of the day. Night time was the hardest but I just switched the routine around, added more books for story time and more distractions because she was used to nursing to sleep. Within a week she stopped trying to nuzzle my boobs

This link has a lot of references on how to wean from the pump and how to wean your little one. I started dropping pumping sessions when the twins were 9 months old. Since it is supply/demand I got the same amount of milk with 2 pumps/day as I was getting with 3 pumps/day. I had a serious stash so I weaned another pump when they were 11 months old and then the last pump daily when they were 11.5 months old. That helped me feel comfortable. at 15 months now they just nurse from the tap when I am around.

i would try to cut down on the pumps for you...that might help decrease your supply, and then maybe she would be more interested in solids on the days she nurses and get more used to that. if she eats more solids, she won't be as hungry to nurse...then you could stretch the time between nurses to 4-5 hours. so then that would decrease the # of times you nurse per day...then try to drop one session. i'm on this phase right now, trying to cut out all day sessions! i'm down to three right now.

I didn't fully wean but when I got pregnant I had to cut DS1 back some because I was going crazy with all his nursing. I cut out one session at a time, so it went slowly, but after a few weeks he was down to about 5x a day instead of 10.

the older they are the harder they are to wean, especially when they're talking and can ask for it. i wish i had weaned before 18 months, but oh well... it certainly made our summer travels much easier.

i'm going to try the lemon juice or vinegar on the boobs trick and see if that works!

One of my close girlfriends has just about finished weaning her 13 month old and it's been a relatively smooth process although her LO wasn't a boobaholic!

She started by reducing the length of the daytime sessions and then cutting them out one at a time, she's now dropping the first morning session by offering solids first then feeding only 1-2 minutes per side with an aim to drop the session completely within the next week. So far the weaning process has been pretty painless and her supply seems to be adjusting ok.

@Snowybreeze: the floor bed sounds like an awesome idea! Dd gates her crib too but I need her to get used to her room and going to sleep on her own-especially since weaning is in the future. I don't want to have to rock her to sleep.

@MarieJ- I really don't think DD needs the night sessions either. It totally is a habit. When she was 3-4 months we had 5-6 hours of straight sleep! Oh yes, we co sleep since June. Believe me we have tried transitioning to crib, failed. Now that she is pulling herself up anything she sees in sight, the crib is no exception. We didn't put bumpers in the cribs until recently I was hopeful we could transition her and also wanted the bumpers to prevent concussions. I can't do it! She is still not super sturdy and wobbles and fall at all kinds of angles, the crib is like a play area to her, she would not even sit still there. Anyways, I wish I've never gotten the crib, just taking space. We have a queen mattress on the floor now, where we put her for naps and sometimes I sneak away after I BF her, so I can jump into bed with Hubby, other times when she catches me, then the bed is still comfortable enough for two, and I will co sleep with her there. We used to have her on our bed, which has a much higher foundation. And I would have heart attacks leaving her there even if she's asleep and I need to walk away for a minute, so the floor mattress has been AWESOME! She gets up from her naps and just play around and navigate down herself to the floor. We also have a baby monitor and see her doing all kinds of cute things by herself. Sorry derailing from the actual topic!
I'll check with our pediatrician then. Oh and we also tried formula, she hates it too.
Haha, I can relate to the sad face about AF returning! I'm not looking forward to it either, but I think it's about time-it might take a while to become fertile, depends on the woman.
Yay for a second baby!

@Snowybreeze: do you co sleep or is your LO in her own room? Since we co sleep (we'll be hopefully transitioning her to her crib soon) I just nurse while I'm asleep. DD's diaper is always super soaked so I'm pretty sure she's getting a good amount. I'm not sure if a night session is needed or not. Her ped seems to think it's not. I think she does it more out of habit

I called her pedi Monday and told them I wanted to start the weaning process and the transition to whole milk. The doc gave me the okay to start since she's three weeks shy of turning 1. You may want to check with your ped to make sure it's okay for your dd.

For me, AF actually returned Monday. :( I was kind of happy to see it because DH and I have also started talking about number two!

I've been slowly starting to do this. I cut down to 1x pump during the day, nurse AM/PM.

On days that I'm at home we nurse 3x and if I feel like he needs more milk then he gets a bottle. On days that I'm at work he gets 1 bottle but a higher amount.

In two weeks, I'm going to cut down to no pumps and substitute his daytime nursing/btl to whole milk. By his 1 year in a month I'm going to just nurse am/pm ('til he's ready to wean) and hopefully feed him whole milk throughout the day as needed.

We haven't tried whole milk yet, so we'll see if he likes it!

@MarieJ- yes! There were times where she was really just comfort nursing, other times she does seem to get a good amount of milk, I felt several let downs during each session. Her diaper is super soaked, I try to sneak in diaper changes when I think she's in dream land lol. She's been waking up 5-7 Times since 7 months? So it's been like this every night for 3 months. .. and honestly I'm exhausted! I kept reading info to see if I can wean her from the night sessions, but now that I've returned to work, I'm happy to nurse her at night to make up for the daytime. Just not sure how I'll ever wean her now. Hugs to you too! And lots of luck to both of us! Btw, we can give cow's milk before 12 months? I was going to ask the doc if we can supplement some kind of milk where it be cow's milk or almond milk since DD refuses my freezer stash. Btw, has your period returned? I heard some got theirs back if they go certain hours without nursing, I guess going 9 hours didn't work. Some have to completely night wean for it to return. I'll keep you posted along the way if this weaning process is working nicely as planned :-)

I want to wean my daughter by her 1st birthday too, which is about two more months. I have been thinking of ways to prep her for it, so far failed :-(. I EBF her for 10 months without bottles. She became a straw cup pro at 8 months, we put water in it, not much Just 2-3oz. I return to the office and decided to use the freezer stash for her day time consumption. She hates it, she doesn't like thawed BM! Warm, cold or room temp, would not.take it. That was with the straw.cup. well with that she'll slurp some and then let it driZzle back out from her mouth. We tried.the.bottle and she would. Chew on the nipple like it's a.teething toy. So now I wonder how will I get her to drink cow's milk if she wouldn't even drink thawed BM. She only wants the boobies. I actually don't mind too much BF over a year but we have plans to have a second baby and AF haven't returned yet. Btw, I haven't pumped since her 3rd month. My first day back in the office, I went 9 hours without nursing/pump...felt like I was going to explode. Right now our schedule is I nurse her right before work, and as soon as I get home, and she doesn't STTN, so she nurses from 5-7 times at night, and screams if she doesn't get it. Screams louder if hubby holds her. I work from home every other day so the boobies are pretty smart in adjusting the milk production. Sorry MarieJ, not much help from me. I need just as much help/advice. Got a tough weaning journey ahead of me!

@MarieJ: ah, gotcha. I mixed. I started with 1/4 whole milk and 3/4 breastmilk or formula (when I didn't pump enough). Have you tried mixing it yet? I did that mixture for a week, then went half and half and then went full whole milk and she was okay with it. I also started giving cold bottles at that point.

I would also do sippy cups (straw cups) of the same mixture at meals.

@MarieJ: It's kind of weird -- DD will only take formula out of the sippy with her meals, but in the afternoon, she will only take it from the bottle. It is so stressful! I'd just start mixing BM with milk now. I had to go to formula 2 weeks ago because i ran out of my stash and I was barely pumping anything in the afternoon. Maybe she just doesn't want to switch yet again.

@Tidybee: Our babies are being difficult making the transition to whole milk! :) But that makes me happy to hear that dropping the midday sessions went fine. My dd takes a bottle at daycare so maybe I will start offering her a sippy cup instead of nursing when we are together. This whole weaning/transition to milk thing is stressful!

@kiddosc: Thank you for responding! I guess I'm just nervous. She's such a boob girl, i can't see how this is going to be easy :(

@mediagirl: Any advice on ditching the pump? I guess my biggest question/concern is haing enough milk for daycare. i don't have the big of a stash...maybe 12 oz :( So would you start ditching sessions and just mixing whatever BM I pump with whole milk? I guess I'm really confused on that aspect of this whole thing! Thanks for your help!
