@SweetiePie: Thanks for checking with your friend! It was hummus that Logan reacted to, although his reaction sounded a bit worse than your friend's. He had full-body hives that went away with Benadryl but then came back an hour later and we had to go to the ER for it. But he's had things like bagels and breads before which I assume are at least produced in facilities with sesame products (especially bagels) and we've never had an issue. Fingers crossed this doesn't end up being a huge deal for us! And YAY for your friend's son outgrowing his!!! Do you know if that was his only allergy? Logan has three, so I'm wondering if his chances of outgrowing are less likely.

@Andrea: Thanks!

@petitenoisette: We have an Anaphylaxis Action Plan to follow, so it will all depend on his reaction. If he only has mild symptoms, then we can get away with just giving him Benadryl. But for any severe symptoms (and the action plan explains what that means), we're to give him the Epi-Pen.

@petitenoisette: @Adira: I just texted with my friend and her son was retested this last summer and he got the all clear!
His initial reaction was hives on his face after eating hummus.
They actually think his reaction may have been more towards tahini/sesame oil than anything sesame at all. So maybe since he's had other potentially contaminated items without reaction maybe it's similar? Was it hummus he reacted to?

@Adira: @SweetiePie: Yes, sounds like our experience. I've even had to remove cracker with hummus from her mouth before and no reaction. For all I know she's not even allergic anymore (her reaction was around 1 and she's 2 now).
Hopefully you have the same experience though it does sound more severe unfortunately. Will you use an epi-pen if he were to be exposed and react again?

I'm sorry about adding another allergy to your list.
The good news is that this was his first reaction and it was to something that obviously contains sesame so try not to feel too overwhelmed. You can probably continue feeding him as you have been, but just call and check on any products that you're unsure about before feeding them to him for the first time.

@petitenoisette: this is what my friend's experience is like - her son has a sesame allergy. He first reacted to hummus when he was much younger (like well under 2 I believe and he's now 5). But they aren't really impared by it - he can't do hummus or a sesame seed bagel, but they still eat wherever and just ask specifically if something has sesame (like if she's ordering him a burger she asks if the bun has seeds and if yes she'll ask for it in bread instead, for example). They don't worry about cross contamination at all (we live in NYC and I know they eat bagels all the time and good luck finding a bagel place without sesame bagels).
It's actually been a year or two since I've even asked directly - I'll ask if he still has it and let you know @adira:

@petitenoisette: Logan's reaction was similar, except he broke out in hives all over his body and we had to bring him to the ER because Benadryl wasn't enough. But he's eaten breads and bagels that I assume we're around sesame products, so maybe he'll be like your daughter and just really have to avoid the more obvious things.

@Adira: my daughter is allergic. She broke out in hives on her face from eating hummus. How did your son react?

She doesn't eat hummus or anything that clearly has sesame seeds on it but otherwise we haven't had issues. Her reaction was relatively mild so I've never really worried (or even thought) much about cross contamination.

@Adira: Sorry you're dealing with this in top of your other restrictions. Unfortunately you will probably encounter a lot of food manufacturers that have no information on sesame. As someone that labels food my recommend would be to ask if they sell the same item in Canada. Sesame is considered an allergen there and if the items are identical and/or made in the same plants sesame should be addressed on their Canadian labels.

My daughter doesn't have a confirmed sesame allergy (will get re-tested at age 2), but vomits when she eats sesame (same as her egg and banana allergy. She also has a peanut allergy but has never had a reaction and I think maybe was a false positive). I don't have any advice, just commiseration.

@snowjewelz: We just discovered it! I guess he'd never had sesame before and had hummus (which contains sesame) for the first time last week.

@jape14: Thank you for the link! I will definitely check it out!

@skipra: Ugh, thank you. That's good to know, but sucks! He's had Wendy's chicken nuggets and fries a few times without any issue. I have no idea if their buns use sesame. But this is another reason to avoid McDonald's (we'd previously been avoiding them because their friends have milk, which my other son is allergic to).

@codeitall: Ugh, that all sounds like a nightmare! I imagine black pepper is probably in even MORE things than sesame is. Thanks for sharing. I'm sorry for your mom!!

My mother is allergic to black pepper and has the same problem with the Spices and Natural Flavorings ingredients. You are legally allowed to ask the company if a product has your allergen in it with a faxed doctor's note and lots of effort, but they frequently update their recipes, so what is safe now may not be safe next month.

She's largely gone towards a 'from scratch' and locally sourced diet because it is safer that way. But for her favorite salad dressings and things like that, she will continually bug the company to make sure she can have them. When she goes out to eat, she talks to the chef about whether the seasonings are prepackaged, if they are, she just requests plainly grilled chicken on a clean pan. And honestly, she doesn't eat without an epi pen on her, whether she's out or at home.

Yeah, it sucks and she really misses her favorite foods (she developed a TON of allergies after I left for college), but she's found a way to make it work.

@Adira: she mentioned that can't eat anywhere that serves sesame on anything because they're so small. So like burgers places with sesame seed buns or Dunkin donuts because they have sesame bagels. Places that do like seared tuna coated with sesame seeds or hummus even. That is SO hard. I'm really sorry you're dealing with it.

Sorry. I have a friend whose LO has a very serious sesame allergy (causes anaphylactic shock) and she says it is extremely challenging. There are only a couple places they can eat out at, including Chipotle and otherwise it sounds like she has to basically make everything from scratch. There are several other serious allergies too but she has specifically complained about sesame due to the lack of labelling on food.
