@Mrs. Oatmeal: agreed on the infusions. I'm surprised they haven't suggested it!

@sera_87: good to know! I didn't realize how long it was

@Raindrop: great advice!! I will keep that in mind if it becomes pretty painful...

@travellingbee: @Mrs. Oatmeal: I'm not sure about the transfusions. I did mention that the L&D dr suggested it. I assume I'll try the 3x/day and get checked at my next appt on Monday to see if it worked...

For me, there was enough time before delivery to do several iron infusions via IV. But had I lost a lot of blood during delivery (any more than 250mL I think), I would have needed a transfusion. Are iron infusions an option for you? It worked much quicker than oral iron supplements.

Okay I had a C-section and lost a lot of blood.

When they gave me blood it hurt a lot! Only at first… so when they put a new bag into me it felt like a burning rush into my vein. With so much other stuff happening I only complained a little bit but man did I dread getting a new bag of blood.

Finally a nurse figured it out. Normally they warm the tube a bit so what was going on was that I was getting cold blood rushing into my veins when I get a new bag and after a while the bag would get to warmer from the room temperature and that’s why it wouldn’t be painful anymore. After like the 3rd bag they figured it out.

Again for me a lot was going on… the pain of having cold blood rushed into my body was probably the least of their concerns as long as blood was getting into me.

This probably won’t happen to you. If it does now you know!

I had to have infusions ahead of time rather than a transfusion after the fact. My hemoglobin got down to 7 something and they wanted to prevent a transfusion. This time it isnt as low so I'm just on supplements

I had four planned transfusions - it takes about 2 hours so bring a book or something to keep you occupied! For me they were weekly.

Hello! I ended up in L&D last night for several contractions. Once those were under control, they told me my hemoglobin was 8.7 which is "very low" for a twin pregnancy. I followed up with my dr and she's increasing my iron supplement from once a day to 3x/day. She also said to plan on a transfusion right after delivery (I'm 32 weeks).

Has anyone else had a planned transfusion?? What was the process - how did it go? Also interested in unplanned and what spurred it...
