You could find an iron on patch and put it on the inside to reinforce it. They're usually pretty unattractive, but if you cut it small and put it on the inside it shouldn't be too noticeable.

@Apex: I used what I had, which may be too lightweight... But it'll appease DD1 for now and I can re-patch later if I need to. She was pretty bummed about the dress, particularly bc she says one of her little friends cut the dress on purpose (I'm not sure if that's true or not).

@PinkElephant: I was going to suggest some medium weight interfacing.

Thanks, all! I patched it with a similar fabric and it looks good (minus the paint!) - will have to see how it washes.

I would put a patch of fabric on the inside of the dress

@PinkElephant: Okay, so since it's knit like a t-shirt, it shouldn't fray. You could patch it on the backside with something. Can you take it into JoAnn's or someplace like that and have a salesperson point you in the right direction as far as what you patch with?

@avivoca: I may have my fabric terms wrong? :) it's 100% cotton, tshirt like.

If it's knit fabric, it should not fray. I would try to patch it or I would sew it up. It's hard for me to say without seeing it.

It sounds like your idea would work. Or is it something you could attach a patch to? I got a hole in an elbow of my favorite sweater and found a coordinating fabric and sewed a patch over it and get compliments on my patch (so weird. But people think it came that way).

I wasn't sure how well it would hold with washing and what not, but it's been great so far.

Help please, sewers! :)

My DD came home from school today with a scissor cut in a favorite lightweight knit dress. All the material is still there, it's a maybe half centimeter wide x centimeter long triangular flap hanging there. My initial thought was to use stitch witchery (on the back) and adhere it to another similar piece of knit fabric (from a onesie or something). Does this sound like it'd work? Or am I better off trying to stitch the entire border of the cut? I was just worried the ends would fray when I wash it and it'd open back up...

Not a super expensive dress, but it was her "first day of school" dress and was super cute, so I'd like to try to preserve it if possible. Thanks for any advice!
