@bluestriped bee: Those are different, but I hadn't even thought of Black Friday deals.

@Boogs: There's a black friday deal on Amazon for a sewing machine. It's the brother machine that is highly rated. I think it's the one I have. http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/psa-some-amazon-black-friday-deals-are-starting-to-roll-out#post-1954543

Another vote for Brother machines. I got the Costco version of the cs6000i. It's a little different than the one pictured but it works wonderfully!

@Boogs: I love my Brother machine. I don't have access to Google, but I think it's the 6000i or something like that. It's wonderful. Comes with a ton of different feet, and programmed stitches.

I have a Janome Sewist 500. My mom bought it for me and she went to a specialty sewing machine shop to buy it. This is the kind of store with plenty of machines in the 5-figures - they know their stuff! They recommended the Janome Sewist 500 as a great beginner machine that you'll be able to grow with. I love it!

I also have the Brother cs6000i that Mrs. Bird and Silva mentioned. I love it. I did not know how to sew when I bought it and I've taught myself. I've sewn lots of different things on it, clothes, bags, Roman shades, pillows, and even quilts. It has lots of things I haven't even used yet. Good luck in choosing, I agree that if you can find somewhere that sells them in store maybe you can try them out

@Boogs: I'm honestly not sure. Do you have a local store that carries brothers? The could maybe let you try them out and explain them to you.

@mrs. bird: @Silva: I had my eye on that one. The SC9500 is one someone else was looking at.
How would I know which to choose?

@Boogs: I have a brother, cs6000i I think? It's like the best seller on Amazon. It was relatively inexpensive, and seems to be a great machine for learning/hobby. I had previously been using an antique featherweight machine, and the bells and whistles on this new one are impressive. I've found it easy to learn how everything works. I knew basic sewing stuff, but have already learned more on this (and I haven't even really figured out all the stuff that it can do yet!).
It's all plastic, which is kind of...meh, I'm used to this antique all metal one. But it has great reviews on Amazon, and I'm hopeful it will last.

@avivoca: I just want to learn how to sew lol. Maybe make simple things like curtains and pillows for starters. Hem pants maybe?

Another Janome user. I really love it. I use to use the brother machine they sell at Costco and it was great too and I still have it. The only reason I upgraded was because I was becoming more serious with my sewing and Janome was more powerful... I didn't have to change feet for my sewing projects due to the marital I was using.

If you go to sew and vac stores or even quilting shops... they almost always floor models you can try to see what works best for you.

@Boogs: it depends on what kind of machine you want and what you want to do. My Janome is a mechanical machine and has 16 stitches, a 4-step buttonhole, and reverses. Some people want an computerized machine that does a lot more than mine does. Some machines remember which position the presser foot was in the last time you used the machine. Then there are combined embroidery/sewing machines too.

Mine is fairly simple, but it's a mid-level beginner machine. I paid around $250 for it. My old Singer couldn't keep up with the heavy use I was putting it through.

@Bao: I was supposed to get a hand me down Kenmore, but it sounds like it needs to be fixed and it would be too costly. So instead a little birdie told me I might be gifted one.

I got a hand me down Kenmore from my Grandma, it's older but it works great. It has a lot of "extras" but honestly since I don't know much about sewing yet I don't really need those things. I hear the Brother ones are a pretty good brand, and are affordable.

What do you know about sewing machines? For someone who know nothing about using them and is looking into getting one, is there one you would recommend? Certain features to look for?
