My MIL taught me the basics in a day. I thought it was pretty easy to learn.

I had the very basics of sewing down, but what really helped me feel comfortable was taking an adult ed class! It met once a week for 6 weeks at the local middle school, and was taught by the home-ec teacher. We had a small project to get us started, and then we brought in our own patterns for the rest of the time. She taught us how to read and interpret patterns, and adjust for different sizes. It helped me to feel more confident in my sewing abilities.

My local quilting shop also offers beginner classes based around a project that can be completed in an afternoon or so. I went to an apron-making class. The cost was $20 + materials, which was about $15 worth of fabric.

I would highly recommend looking for a quick class like that just to help you feel comfortable. Now I always have a project going, it has been a great way to relax!

I took a sewing course and it helped a lot. But I still get frazzled!

I just learned how to use a sewing machine last summer from DH's grandma. She was really patient, and it went well. I'm a beginner, but I'm tackling lots of projects!

I think it takes the right teacher. My MIL tried to teach me and failed. My SIL came over and brought fabric, a pattern and showed me how to use my machine. I'm still a very beginner beginner but I know how to make simple things now!

I taught myself. I was given a vintage machine, and then bought an entry-level Singer. I just upgraded to a Janome this year and it's amazing. If you want to start, get a good mechanical machine (not one of the computerized ones) and find an easy project like a pillow to practice on and build your confidence. You can do it!

I'm kind of a sewing failure. My mom tries so hard to teach me. I just don't have the patience to do it correctly. I can do the basics, but it's not always presentable

Was it hard to learn? I've been wanting to learn for a while, but i have to admit i'm pretty intimidated by sewing machines! Maybe it's because i've always been around industrial machines?
