As with anything, I would like the chance to review the materials and methodology. I realize I won't be able to control everything that my child is exposed to, but I would at least like the chance to make sure that there's no fear mongering involved.

The thing about sex is that a lot of it is emotional and not all kids have the same level of emotional maturity.

@Synchronicity: @Mrs. Pickle: The person I spoke with said they are hearing rumors that parents won't be allowed to request their kids opt out. I really don't see that happening, but their argument is that opting out of vaccinations isn't going to be an option anymore so sex ed will be next. They also don't want their kids learning about transgendered people. So, they want to remove them from school entirely before any of that begins.

I'm all for the more the merrier. Kids learn about things whether we like it or not. I would rather they learn from qualified, and educated individuals who they would feel comfortable talking with in addition to what they learn at home. Way better than experimenting to learn or learning from friends.

I'm all for it. I believe they should communicate with parents and give them an opportunity to continue the conversation at home. A lot won't - or they suck at it - which is why I think it is even more important.

I went to middle & high school in the "good" county in my area, and had abstinence only education. I believe it is the same now. I also had a high school science teacher skip the evolution chapters in our biology book.

I think it's important to be taught in schools and to try to have the talk with your kids. Somethings were left out in the school one. It would have been super awkward to have the talk with my parents because they never talked about this kind of stuff. I'm hoping to have a better relationship with my kids.

I don't really have an opinion on sex ed in schools as I was not raised in public school and at this point the plan isn't for our kids to attend one.

I am, however, very pro parents stepping up and delivering an honest comprehensive message about sex to their kids and doing it in an age appropriate manner over the years. I never had any sex ed from anyone over the years other than my mom and because it was handled naturally and developed as a conversation over the years it never was awkward or embarrassing. I hope to follow suit with my own kids.

I'm very, very pro comprehensive sex ed in schools. I would actually really like to teach it, but I'm elem certified and it's under HS health here. I have toyed with going back to school when DD is older for it though.

I think I would want to see and know the curriculum that my children will get in school and try to augment and supplement what is being taught. I don't believe in abstinence only education but as a Christian I believe it's my job as a parent to fill in the spiritual and religious context. I don't believe sex and religion are separate and ne'er the two shall meet. I'm fine with comprehensive sex ed but my kids are going to get a lot of religious training at the same time (which most Christian kids do at that age with things like confirmation or baptism) so they understand the spiritual reasons why we would encourage them to wait.

As early and as often as possible is my theory. I'll definitely be having age appropriate conversations often. I feel like sex Ed in school is good to have, but we didn't necessarily get accurate info, but I did go to catholic school. For instance, they really talked about nFP as a birth control method. But, I don't think that's a good approach. It's more of a way to get pregnant than to avoid getting pregnant. It just isn't a good or feasible method for teens.

I will provide my child(ren) with lots of conversations about sex and be very open and honest. I agree that more is better, but I'll make sure my kids get proper sex ed from us just in case whatever is given in schools doesn't cover everything we want.

I would prefer to talk to my kids about it first, but I'm all for them getting sex education in school. The best thing our teacher did was let us write down ANY question we had after her talk and she answered it (kept it anonymous). Took off a lot of pressure and let us ask the things we were dying to know but afraid to ask.

I think the value of sex education vs. abstinence only "education" is pretty clear and well documented in teen pregnancy, abortion and STD rates. Since I'm a fan of all those things (lower abortion/pregnancy/STD rates), I'm obv a fan.

I think the more sex education that children receive, the better.

I feel like most of the parents who would choose to avoid sex education in schools are the ones who are not going to give thorough, accurate sex education lessons at home (i.e. preaching abstinence only). Instead, the kids are going to become "educated" through their peers or through their own experimentation.

My parents were so glad for sex education in schools and so was I. No awkward birds and bees talk.

I think it is absolutely crucial that kids get sex education and I believe condoms should be distributed. Kids are going to have sex no matter what. They should know how to do it safely and responsibly.

I think it absolutely needs to take place in schools, and it needs to be thorough. There are a lot of kids out there who aren't receiving the information that they need to be safe, and that's a dangerous thing. If a parent feels strongly that they don't want their child receiving that information at school, they should be able to remove their kid from those sessions, but in general I think every child should participate, and earlier is better.

I think it's incredibly naive to want to be the only person your child can talk to about sex. Many children feel awkward or uncomfortable asking their parents questions about sex. I hope our school provides an environment where my daughter will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions. And I certainly don't want her to be taught "abstinence only" sex ed.

How do you feel about sex education in schools?

I recently spoke with someone about how they don't want anyone to talk to their kids about sex education in an educational setting. Or anyone else, really. They said they instead prefer to be the only one teaching their kids anything sex education related.

I had my own thoughts on the matter, but was just curious, what are your thoughts on sex education?
