We did StoryWorth for my parents a couple of years ago. My dad, who is not naturally a storyteller, got super into it. I think because he's not big on talking about himself, this was a comfortable way for him to share stories. My mom, on the other hand, had a hard time getting organized/doing the writing, even though she's naturally the one who talks more about her life. She had pages of random notes and post-its with what she wanted to write about, but she didn't end up doing many of the questions. She purchased herself an extension, but I don't know if she's actually made any progress.

My MIL tells stories of the family all the time but there is very little written down as far as history so we are gifting her Storyworth this year. I am hoping the prompts help guide her so we get some good stories out of it. She is good on the computer so I think the email format will be nice but we will see. Trying to keep my expectations low.

We did StoryWorth for my FIL because he's a storyteller, and it worked out SO WELL. I loved it. I as the one who organized the stories and found pictures online of his hometown in the 1960s and 1970s, etc., uploaded his childhood pics, etc. It also became our present to all the BILs and my husband's uncles (which normally we don't do gifts for, but this was special.)

I have this one that I gave my grandmother when I was in highschool. She spent a year or two filling it out and gave it back to me. It has a bunch of prompts and spaces for pictures. It also have some one liners, like favorite things then and now, which are easy to fill out.

She went on to take some writing classes and write family stories with her 14 brothers and sisters. I have her book of stories too now. It's really special to have.

We gave something similar to DH's grandmother and never saw it again.

@bhbee: That’s my biggest thing. My mom is a reader for sure, and I think she’d have the time since she works in a library, but she’s also not one to share many stories and she’s not a fast typer. I wouldn’t want to spend the money if she’s not going to do it. I’m going to have to feel her out…

@caitcat: That’s awesome your mom filled it out. Its such a neat idea and I would love to get all those answers and stories that I haven’t heard from my mom. My dad is a storyteller but no typer and not computer savy so I’m not sure if he’d write them down.

My mom did Storyworth and got really into it. She loves writing and telling life stories. She's also very sentimental, so it was right up her alley. The email format worked really well for her too. I don't think she would have enjoyed a similar handwritten book/journal setup as much though. I'm not sure she would have consistently taken the time to write things out? That's where the email setup was really helpful for her. She also uploaded pictures along with most Storyworth entries, which she said was tricky. But I'm not sure if it really was difficult, or if she was just having trouble with it. I offered to help a few times, but she never took me up on it - so I'm thinking it wasn't that bad. The book turned out nicely in the end, and I'm grateful she took the time to put it together.

We tried to get my dad to do it too, but he had no interest. He's not much of a story-teller in general though, and is a much more private person...so I don't think it was really his thing.

When everything shut down with the pandemic in spring 2020, my husband gave his parents a short book of postcards with "life story" sort of prompts on them to see if they would periodically mail one to our us and the kids. I'm assuming that idea was a flop on their end though. We've never seen the postcards or heard anything about it again. I thought the idea was cute as a lower maintenance and quicker turnaround alternative to something like Storyworth though.

We did storyworth twice - my FIL didn’t fill it out at all, and honestly I’m sure it feels like a slog if you’re not naturally a writer! My mom filled it out but didn’t write that much for each. Hopefully though it’s still something the kids can read in the future. No complaints about the printed book - We didn’t do all the options to add photos and things except on the cover.

I guess I’d just think hard about whether they will actually finish and enjoy doing it!

Has anyone done a share my story -type book, like Storyworth, or My Mom "In her own words", "Tell me your life story", etc. either an online version or an actual write-in journal?

Looking for ideas for my parent's and want something they'll actually fill out as a nice memory item for us kids and their grandkids.

Would love to hear what others have done or thoughts on either?
