@RKitty: haha, I need to scare my body into behaving! My OB had mentioned she can run tests to determine if I need to see a fertility specialist... I've reached out to her and I'm waiting to hear back about next steps!

In the meantime, does anyone have any Co-Q10 recommendations...?

I'm not in the 40+ group but I was AMA. (Currently 38 with a 1yr and 3yr). But I've got several mom friends who are in the 40+ group and some with fathers who are older. Obviously since they're all mom friends they've had successful pregnancy but I'll say most did require some sort of intervention. In some cases IVF and in some cases just getting health issues under control and better managed.

I would totally start speaking medical assistance sooner then later. It can take forever to get the referals/approvals/etc you need to get help so the sooner you get ball rolling the better. And at 35+ its 6 months not a year of TTC.

And not just your OB. It wouldn't hurt to get a check up at your regular doc to. So many things can effect your fertility - like Thyroid issues.

And hopefully you'll just be like me over 1yr TTC and the day you show up at your RE appt after finishing all your tests you get a :bfp: .... (my RE said we had to scare my body into behaving... )

Good luck!

@MoonMoon: I wanted to add, as a more positive note (maybe?) that the whole process for us, from starting TTC to losses and RE interventions only took a little over a year of trying. I just happened to get pregnant very easily. And because of the losses, there were several months that we didn't try because everything was evening back out. Which is why I say that it could have just been that we needed time to get a healthy egg.

@MoonMoon: my OB told me after 40 that you have a one in three chance of getting a good quality egg. I had three losses - like @Chuckles my first two losses were really early blighted ovums suggesting poor quality. It’s hard at this age but doable with support and patience! I say that as I’m embark on try 4 as we speak at 41.

Don't be discouraged! My best friend is either turning 39 or 40 this year and getting married this month; met "the one" in her late 30's (maybe 1-2 years ago?) I know she is being proactive by having already gone to an RE to get everything checked out, and going to start trying right away. You got this  :goodluck:

@MoonMoon: my OB ordered my husband's, but that just because my husband's insurance is in a different network and were looking months out. Otherwise his PCP was fine ordering the SA.

@Ajsmommy: @MoonMoon: That's how I feel, too, mostly. I'm 36 weeks pregnant, and I'll be 40 in February. We did see an RE because I had 4 losses in a row. We did a bunch of interventions like letrozole, trigger shot, estradiol, and more - basically everything besides an IUI. I had also gotten pregnant easily with DS when I was 32. In the end, it's hard to tell whether one of the RE interventions had anything to do with it or whether I just needed to catch a good egg. My losses were fairly early or a blighted ovum, which suggests that they were poor quality eggs. I would definitely suggest seeing an RE to rule out any obvious issues, but it might just take time.

@MoonMoon: keep the faith sista!!! I was not 40 but I was 39!! At 38 I was sent to a fertility specialist and we did some medicated cycles.. worst decision ever. All BFN's, lots of money gone and lots of emotional and physical stress. After 5 cycles we stopped. And then just after I turned 39 I got a BFP, naturally conceived. Had DS 45 days before I turned 40.

It's possible. It will take time... and it will be discouraging at times but it's 100% possible. Just has to be the perfect egg, the perfect sperm and the perfect timing.

@bhbee: thank you for your input. I've heard the 6 months advice too and somehow just didn't think it would apply to me? Sounds crazy I know. I have a small problem, maybe: my Rx for birth control kept auto-renewing for a few months after I stopped taking it, and my OB mentioned that insurance considers that you are still taking it, and therefore not ttc, if they covered bc. That's such a small thing, though, I shouldn't let it trip up the process.

@beckysue: congratulations on your pregnancy and thank you so much for the good vibes!

@threeplusme: loved hearing about your SIL's pregnancies! Yes, I will def follow up with my OB, maybe about some testing or referrals.

@Shantuck: congratulations on your pregnancy, and thank you for the recommendations. Based on some internet advice, I've started taking Vit C, magnesium, and zinc supplements. I'll definitely look up the book. I think I had the false belief that since I was able to get pregnant once (at 33) that I wouldn't have a problem subsequently.

I'm 39 but will be 40 when I deliver this baby (currently 18 weeks). I had a lot of trouble conceiving when I was 35 due to diminished ovarian reserve. I read the book "It Starts With The Egg" by Rebecca Fett and joined her Facebook group (she's an active participant and frequently answers reader questions in the Facebook group). I attribute two of my pregnancies to her advice / supplement suggestions. I took everything recommended in her book - DHEA, NAC, Vitamin C, etc. I highly recommend consulting her book.

My sister in law had her 1st at 40 and her second at 42 with no intervention so it is possible. I do agree that i would seek some help just to reassure myself and it is usually recommended to see your doctor after 6 months if you are over 35.

Hi MoonMoon,
I am 42 and currently pregnant (19 weeks today). So I am proof that it can happen naturally. I found out I was pregnant for my 42nd birthday.

I would agree with BHbee above though in saying that it can't hurt to start seeking help from an RE, especially if this is something you really want.

Sending you lots of positive thoughts on your journey!

I haven’t actually been in the over 40 position, but having had fertility and loss issues, sending you

The general guideline I’ve always heard is seek help at 6m of trying after age 35. I don’t think that means you can’t do it naturally - but getting the process started with an RE could be a good use of time as a just in case, as it can take some time to do all the testing. Sometimes just a little med help can make the difference!

Hi ladies,

I guess I'm feeling sorry for myself and could really use any happy stories you have to share! Did you or anyone you know have a baby at 40 years old or older? What was the journey like?

I keep going back and forth between thinking I'm too old/it's too late (I'm 40, DH is 51) and it's not too late, people do this all the time!

We've been ttc for just under a year and I know that's small in the big picture but the age issue makes timing seem more urgent. I'm wondering when to start involving medical intervention.

So share stories!
