@Foodnerd81: We started from the beginning... sort of. We would try it, and sometimes they would fall asleep, especially DD. If they cried, we'd pick them up immediately, especially when they were teeny, because I knew it was too early to really sleep train, but we thought we could start the habits early. Sometimes it didn't work at all, and we would rock to sleep. Hell, sometimes NOW it doesn't work (8.5 months) and they get rocked to sleep, but it's rare. We also let them fuss it out now.

BABY REPOSITIONING!!! I really can't stress it enough.. Make sure your baby looks both ways frequently and alternate which way they lay in the crib at night. This is the best thing you can do to prevent plagiocephaly. Had we known this we may have been able to prevent the lump that DD got on her head. :(

@charlotte: we use them for traveling!

@808love: YES!!! I relied sooo heavily on the yoga ball for the first 3 months of K's life! I was so scared to deflate it when I finally did. Lol

I can't think of anything original, but I would advise to have some kind of soft wrap/sling baby carrier for the early weeks. To get baby used to it, keep baby close to your, and free up your hands to get other stuff done. It was and is invaluable to me still!

Drowsy but awake. Not nursing/rocking to sleep has saved my life! I put both of them down wide eyed today, and I haven't heard a peep (she says as she knocks on wood). It's not foolproof, but it's pretty good.

I love the range of answers here. All so helpful!

@tinyperson: I will have to check the $ store! The boy can definitely go through some disposable pads lately

@T.H.O.U.: trying this upon next meltdown!!

And yes. Babies are crazy. I have to tell myself everyday that some of his meltdowns and poop issues and other tough times are not my fault, out of my control, and not a reflection of me as a success or failure!

@Weagle: I agree with "babies are crazy." ;)

My best tip is just to trust your gut and go with the flow. Babies generally sort themselves out if you don't over analyze too much.

Don't compare your child to others. Babies are crazy. There's no way to rationalize what they're all doing, and very little of a baby's behavior depends on parenting.

I was going to say yoga ball so I'll give my second favorite tip. Similar to going outside to change the scenery, sometimes LOs just need to see new faces. My fussy baby was an angel for everyone else and I felt like a failure or like she didn't like me. When somebody told me it wasn't me, she just wanted new faces it made me feel so much better. I looked forward to going out and providing her with those new faces. It made us both happier.

And dental bibs/pee pads for blowouts & travel. Amazing.

@Crumbs: Ok.. I tried this and it was decidedly unsuccessful when my LO was younger!!

Best tip ever would be that baby sleep isn't necessarily a product of something the parents are doing or not doing and to not listen to anyone who suggests otherwise :)

@808love: C LOVES bouncing in the ball, especially with Dh. Buys me time to pee, get set up for feeding, etc, and calms her so well. I did a lot of bouncing while pregnant too and wondered if it was related.

If they are having a sudden cry moment, a quick change of scenery like walking outside helps. I think the change in temperate and brightness helped a lot. I even would go out at night sometimes.

Not really an infanttip but good for breastfeeding. While soaking your body in an epsom salt bath. Roll over and soak your sore nipples in the water. It helped so much with the healing of cracked nipples!

@808love: The yoga ball absolutely changed my life. My aunt (veteran colic mom) brought it over after she heard about our 24/7 screamer. I think I probably bounced on that ball about 20 hours a day for 3 months. It was the only thing that worked. (at least I bounced off the baby weight?)

If your newborn has one eye shut/eye infection, use breast milk. No massaging of the eye duct necessary. Just drop some breast milk in there every so often and it'll clear up in a few days.

When you are trying to get your nipple back from a sleeping baby, wait until they aren't sucking (just latched), slide your finger in to release the nipple and then quickly, gently push their lower jaw up. Sometimes a little gentle circular rub helps too. This was life changing for me to figure out.

This one may not be the best but I never saw it in any baby books and it saved us much stress. In case of crying, break open the....YOGA BALL. I sat on it and bounced her in my arms. The motion was just right and helped her to sleep or soothe.

I really wanted to start this post to say THANK YOU to Mrs. Bee for the best tip ever. My son is teething and has some scary #2 action going on. Public blowouts are his specialty right now....

BUT ever since we bought some PUPPY TRAINING PADS, life has been better! They are so great for a clean changing surface on icky public changing tables..and we even use them at home when he has a particularly spectacular situation where I don't want to destroy the changing pad cover.

Thank you Mrs. Bee! I am never without my puppy pads now, haha.

Any other great infant tips?
