Best decision ever 15 years ago. Water sports became my thing and awesome for baby raising. Worth every penny. I went to the same person my optometrist went to and my doc's magic formula is to wear ONLY glasses as long as possible (longer than they recommend) to get your eye back to the most natural original shape before doing correction measurements. Also go to a very highly qualified referred doctor. My eyes were a little dry for a random month in the first year but that's it. Perfect now! Even in my old age!!

I have chronically dry eyes so my eye doctor says I'm not a good candidate but I am curious to check into it more based on all of these great stories about dry eye relief from Lasik!!

@AmeliaBedilia: do you have thick or thin corneas? I also didn't qualify for LASIK because of thin corneas and such a bad prescription. I was so sad. But I'd love to try something else if it's out there. My eyes have gotten so dry lately.

@Eko: have you looked at PRK? I was also told I was a terrible candidate for LASIK due to think corneas. I had PRK which caused a week of misery and mild dry eyes, but life-changing decision!

@mediagirl: mine was over $4000. I had it done when I was 22. I needed to have one touch up 5 years later because my eyes weren't stable. My doctor offers touch ups for life if needed. I figured the cost of contacts, glasses, solution over the years wouldnt be much of a cost difference.

@Mrs. Bee: If you have dry eye ls you may want to talk to your eye doctor first. My best friend had it done and has suffered from worse dry eyes ever since. Everyone including her are still so happy they had it done, though! To combat the dry eye, they had to put plugs in her eyes to help lubricate.

I did it just a few months ago and it has been fabulous, especially for travel since I no longer have to worry about having enough contacts, solution and glasses. I did femto lasik, which is also called bladeless lasik and I was amazed how well I could see right away. My vision in my left eye is perfect and my right eye is off by 1/4 of a diopter, according to my doctor. But with both eyes everything is crystal clear. My doctor offers free touch ups for the first year, but I think my right eye is so minor that I won't bother. I do still have dryness, but it is notably better since the first weeks after the procedure and I only use drops a few times a day, which is just a minor inconvenience. I wish I had done it earlier (I wore contacts for 21 years!) and you should definitely consider doing it before you move abroad! If you normally wear contacts, I would stop now and switch to glasses. I had to wear glasses for about 3 weeks before I could have the procedure since my doctor said my prolonged contact use had an effect on my vision and cornea shape. He wanted to make sure my eyes had had enough time to adjust.

Best decision ever!!! Got it done when I was 20, but my vision had been stable for ~5 years? 15 years later and every time I get my eyes checked they're still good! I just suffer from dry patches, which I already had + a lot of protein which caused build-up problems with contacts. Dry eyes are common after Lasik, but much better than dry eyes with contacts!

I am so happy that I did it and love being contacts and glasses-free! I did think the procedure itself was pretty scary, but thankfully it didn't take too long. My doctor gave me a low dose of Valium, but I seriously needed way more - I had a hard time staying still and looking at the right spot (totally involuntary - my body was not cooperating!). My recovery was pretty straightforward - I went home and had a nap and when I woke up I could see! My eyes were extremely dry for awhile and my Dr had me use rewetting drops pretty much constantly to help with the healing. The dryness gradually went away and my eyes were completely fine after that. I had major issues with dryness and wearing contacts before so it is amazing to not deal with that anymore. I was surprised how tired and scratchy my eyes were for the first week so make sure you can limit major screen time if you need to. Overall an awesome experience for me!

I had pretty much the same experience as @sandy:

I had basically had to stop wearing my contacts due to dry/irritated eyes (after wearing contacts for 18 years). After the procedure I had to use rewetting drops really frequently for the first few months, but 2 years post-LASIK I use them once in the morning and once at night

My vision is 20/20 or better. So yes - best decision ever!

Not great for me. I had it done ten years ago and by 4 years later was back in glasses full time. My eyes are also drier and as a result I'm not able to have it adjusted again. I'm certainly the minority but I always want to mention my experience!

Best decision ever.

Been wearing contacts since 6th grade, got LASIK at 27 and 6 years later, it's still awesome.

Procedure takes less than 10 minutes, it is a little spooky when you "fade to black" while they work on your eye, but it's over so quick that you don't really notice. And the operating room was so cold that's all I was thinking of. I did have to go back several times for at least a month to make sure eyes were healing well. The healing time is also about a month where they don't recommend swimming, looking at the sun directly, etc.

@Caly: totally fixed my dry eye issue! It was the constant use of contacts that were drying out my eyes. Also I had a job that required starting at a computer screen and that really dries out your eyes. I did the Restasis eye drops and all the supplements to help it before lasik and once I had it done no more dry eyes!

Best decision ever here too. My contacts had started really bothering my eyes too. My vision was pretty bad so I was told I had a slightly higher risk of needing an adjustment or glasses after my eyes settled after the surgery, and I was in the 4% that do- I need glasses with a tiny prescription for driving, especially at night, and prefer to use them at movie theaters or during PowerPoint type presentations, the rest of the time I'm fine without.

My eyes were dry for a few months after, just had to put drops in as needed. It is so nice not needing contacts or glasses, especially when playing in the water with LO. I am so glad I did it!

They did say if you are over 35 or so, sometimes they will under correct one eye to delay the need for reading glasses, which most people will need one day, LASIK or not.

THE BEST!!!! Seriously, I would recommend it 100x over.

I could only wear contacts for a few hours a day before they were unbearable. After LASIK, I still have dry eye (only when I wake up) but all I have to do is put a drop in each morning and I am fine for the whole day.

@sandy: so, it impoved your dry eyes? In the last year or so I've developed a problem with dry eyes (now take Rostasis daily so I can continue to wear contacts) and my concern was that lasik may make them worse. Obviously, I'd need to talk to the dr about my specific issue but it's good to hear someone's had success!

@Mrs. Bee: best decision ever! Not having to deal with glasses and contacts when traveling, camping, and swimming is so convenient!

I put it off for years and years bc I was too afraid of the procedure. I ended up doing it after I got married bc my husband's health savings plan had a great employer contribution amount. Anyway, I did it and it definitely was the best decision ever.

My eyes kept getting worse and worse before I had it done and were getting so dry bc of the constant contact use. My eyes have no dry eye symptoms since doing lasik. Also amazing is how much your vision is affected by dry eyes. If your eyes are properly hydrated it refracts light properly and your vision is so much more clear. Not wearing contacts improves dry eyes so much and your vision is significantly better once the dryness is under control

I personally don't qualify (womp womp) but have heard only good things from my friends and family that did get it. It's not painful and quick recovery. My dad got lasik done about 12-15 years ago and said he started noticing his eye sight getting worse in his early 40s. At 48 he needs his glasses occasionally again.
