I was really sick to my stomach from weeks 6 - 14. Carbs helped me a lot and ginger ale. Try to not go to bed on an empty stomach... that helped me sometimes.

Sometimes just thinking about certain foods/things would make me dry heave. If I felt like I was really going to throw up, my one friend told me to think about fresh fruit! So I would talk myself down by imagining fresh strawberries, grapes, blueberries... haha sounds weird but it helped me!

@evenstar982: Err.. nothing helped me that much (morning sickness from week 6-17). But the things that were tolerable for me were: sourdough bread, strawberries, smoothies (only way I got protein), and a mix of almonds and dry cranberries. The first trimester was horrific.. the beginning of the second was pretty bad.. and then for me it got much better. Good luck and try to keep your head up!

@evenstar982: What really helped me was chocolate milk! My husband got up for work between 4 and 5am and he'd bring me a small glass of chocolate milk then. I'd drink it and then when my alarm went off at 6:30 my stomach wasn't empty. It really helped! I hope that you feel better! It does get better :)

Week 8 is a particularly bad week- I think I just curled into a ball on the sofa and stayed there all that week, apart from trips to puke in the bathroom : ) The biggest tip I have is to never, ever, EVER let your stomach get empty and always stay hydrated. Just find something to eat and drink that doesn't make you hurl and keeping it by your bed and in your bag will really help. If smells set you off then carry an orange or lemon with you and sniff it when something horrible catches your nose - totally helps. In all honesty, the only thing that helped me not want to die was medication, three different types of it all at once, two of them prescription - and I was STILL puking. Most people will stop feeling sick in their second trimester though so hopefully you'll feel much better soon,

Saltines (at work, bedside, everywhere!) ginger candy (hated it pre pregnancy but ended up carrying in all my pockets and coats to pop in my mouth anytime a wave a nausea hit, somehow always on the subway!!!). Orangina, ginger ale, San pellegrino. That's what got me through! Good luck!

@evenstar982: if it eases your mind at all, my OB recommended a can or glass of coke before Tylenol for pain! Tylenol is generally recommended in pregnancy so to encourage a little caffeine before trying Tylenol helped me be ok with it :)

Thanks ladies - it can feel really lonely but its reassuring to know I'm not truly alone!

@MungBean: @Foodnerd81: Crackers/Cheerios by the bed it is then... fingers crossed that will help some. Glad to know after the worst of it you forget how bad it is - I hear you on the "why did I DO this to myself?" thing!

@hummusgirl: I actually brought some wristbands today after reading that elsewhere... they MAY have helped, but hard to tell as I didn't put them on until mid-afternoon which is usually my turning point anyway. Will try again tomorrow.

Sounds like week 8 is a bit of a "wonder week" for pregnancy... hopefully it will be better soon. My sympathies to any other mamas currently in the same (nausea-inducing) boat! xx

I was sick for 12 weeks (week 6-18).

For me gingerale did not work. But along with prescription Zofran for the vomiting and Less Drowsy Dramamine (day) or Unisom (night) for the nausea, I found that everything @sorrycharlie said aside from gingerale was GREAT.

A little caffeine won't hurt and actually helps so don't feel bad about a coke. Way less caffeine in coke than coffee anyway. ;). Food everywhere all the time, sour stuff, and fast food (yeah I know...but it helped). I also developed an intense need for cherry icees, which can be bought at burger king or Target. They saved many a workday.

Didn't read replies yet - I was sick all 36 weeks after bfp! :(

-lemonade!
-coke
-sucking sour patch kids
-lots of carbs all day long
-ginger ale was amazing!
-keeping food by the bed, in my bag, in my car, etc
-greasy food actually helped for some weird reason. Never ate more $menu items than when I was pregnant!

I had this all day nausea from week 6 to about week 24 and also swore off having any more kids at the time...but once the nausea broke it never returned and my pregnancy was super easy after that (except for all the weight I gained)

I totally relate to the soda craving...I never drink soda but I craved it and felt like it helped with the nausea. I only drank ginger ale and Sierra Mist natural...I also started drinking tons of sparking water (hated it prior to getting pregnant)

Sucking on ice all day helped...and hard candies...I bought a giant bag of dum dums and would have a few throughout the day.

I ate so many saltine crackers and carbs in general...but everything else made me feel sick so that's what I ate

Hang in there!!!

Ugh, nausea is the worst! What saved me were those mini-cans of ginger ale (at least 2 a day, since they really only worked while I was drinking them) and not even trying to eat anything normal or nutritious. Every night, I would walk around the grocery store and pick up things that didn't totally disgust me. This included Milano cookies, Easy Mac, pineapple and oranges (pretty much any fruit was good). But if I tried to buy something for lunch the next day (like a frozen dinner), I would be grossed out by the time it was time to eat it.

I also tried those sea-bands you put on your wrists and they helped a little.

Mine went away around 13 weeks. Good luck!

For me (other than prescription drugs -- Zofran) my best cures were sipping hot herbal tea. (Water or other drinks mostly made me gag.) And sucking on lemon candies. I feel your pain. Morning sickness is the worst, and I had it for my entire pregnancy. I hope yours goes away in another couple of weeks like it's supposed to!

Hard peppermint candies (Starlight Mints, I think?) helped me a lot. And trying to keep something in my stomach at all times (sometimes just a handful of almonds, or a piece of toast with peanut butter). Honestly, though, I was sick all the way through to the very end...these just helped me not vomit in public.

@Foodnerd81: totally agree on the struggling to remember part!! I vaguely remember swearing to never have another child and wanting to die, but now I can't seem to remember how painful it was :) also great tip on leaving snacks by the bed! I kept a small container of crackers next to me at all times.

That sounds exactly like me, you aren't just being a wuss! I ended up keeping a little container full of cheerios next to my bed, so I'd have a handful of them before even getting up-- I'm a snoozer, so when the alarm went off, I'd have a handful, sleep another 15 minutes, then get up on the second alarm. Then have toast or something right away.
The biggest thing for me was never to have an empty stomach-- always have at least crackers or something on hand so the second you feel hungry or nauseous, have a couple. Also especially in the beginning protein helped a lot, even though most forms of it grossed me out-- for me, almond butter on toast or meatball subs worked. I agree that cola was awesome, but maybe ginger ale will work too.

My midwives told me that almonds are supposed to help, although I didn't hear than until the worst of the nausea was gone so didn't try it. Also vitamin B6 is supposed to help-- I don't know, I did try that and can't say if it helped or not. Unisom and B6 at night should help and they said even helps the next day, but I was nervous about taking Unisom unless I really needed it (even though the midwives said it was fine-- get the caplets that you can split in half, not the gel tabs).

Finally, it almost definitely won't last for 9 months. I had the same feelings as you-- oh my god, how am I going to get through this, I thought I WANTED this? But now at 13 weeks, I'm struggling to remember how bad it was. So you WILL get though it. It just sucks for a few weeks, a lot. I think 8-9 weeks was my worst point, actually.

Good luck!!

ETA: Um.... sorry for the novel!

I had pretty bad MS for the first few weeks. I found that making sure my stomach was never empty helped, so I made sure to eat every two hours. It was always something like saltines or Cheerios. Oyster crackers were my best friend. I also found that sweet-tangy combos helped (like cherries or mangoes). But definitely eating a small meal or snack every couple hrs was the most beneficial. Sometimes I even woke up in the middle of the night to eat. Good luck and hope it passes really soon!!

I'm 8 weeks (first pregnancy), and have been suffering with (what I would call) horrible nausea and all-day-long-sickness for over a week now.

Tried lots of things to cope/cure/distract myself/'power through' but at some point most days I just wind up wanting to sob my heart out and worry that the next 9 months will be awful and I'll be a wreck my the time LO arrives!

Cola seems to make the nausea subside a little, but avoiding loads due to the caffine.
Anything starchy/savory is gooood - plain salted pretzels/chips etc.
Lemon/ginger flavoured things help a little, and sucking on hard candy seems to help too...

I'm pretty sure the biggest problem is it's worse on an empty stomach (so mornings are really bad) - its a vicious circle; emtpy stomach=feel sick=don't want to eat=feel sick=still have empty stomach, and repeat!

Am I being a big wuss, or has anyone else / is anyone else experiencing similar symptoms?
