I found it helps to find an activity that distracts you and occupies your hands - especially if you are watching tv and itching to grab a snack. Fold laundry, start a craft project, paint your nails - something to distract you from the urge to snack.

@lizzywiz: It's a hard habit to break! i get into munching routines that i have to wean myself off of. Can you at least keep some healthier options around? Veggies and salsa, maybe?

@sarac: well,, it's the amount/ type of food. Cheese, chips and salsa, sweets if we happen to have any, seconds of everything. And, of course, the wine. So, basically, I throw myself a little party every night for making it through work and toddler-hood.
It's my cue to relax, I guess.
Thanks for the advice, ladies!
Last night went better and it wasn't too hard, but things like this are easy for me to start and easy to stop, lol, so we will see how my long game is.

@lizzywiz: @cait: yeah, I was going to ask why you think you are eating. I think reward/relaxation is common for a lot of people. Other times, people eat out of boredom, habit, etc. If you can figure out why you are eating, I think that helps a lot. If it is a way to reward yourself or a way to unwind, I'd try to find something else that does the same thing. Maybe buying a magazine that you reserve for that time of day... taking a bath/hot shower... listening to music... sipping tea, etc? Or another "reward", like a backrub, reading a book, etc. I think for a lot of people, just getting away from the kitchen, by going upstairs or to another room, helps a lot. Brushing your teeth or eating something minty helps too. Good luck!!!!!!

For the occasional turned nightly wine, I just told myself only one weeknight per week OR no weeknight wine and stuck with that. As for snacking, instead of eliminating it altogether, I found healthy alternatives. 100 calories bags of popcorn, large holiday-type or flavored marshmallows (I would count out the portion), tea, etc.

A lot of times when you feel hungry.. you are just dehydrated... not saying that is what happening to you... but maybe? Try drinking a big glass of water and waiting 20 minutes to see if you still feel like you want that snack. :) Good luck!

I would go one step more and totally get ready for bed right after dinner! I used to do this when WJ was a baby. RIght after dinner we'd put him to bed, and while Wagon Sr. was finishing up the bedtime routine I got ready for bed. Brushed teeth, washed face, took out contacts, changed into pajamas, and everything. It's best if you then hang out in the bedroom but I found that even going downstairs and hanging out there I still didn't want to snack because I wanted to be able to just go back upstairs and dive right into bed without brushing my teeth again!!

Eating a decent dinner and brushing teeth ASAP is on the agenda tonight. My goal is to try to break this habit without being cranky about it, so here's to hoping.

I'm guilty of this too. Not having unhealthy snacks in the house is huge. I'm not likely to make a grocery run at that hour, so if it isn't there I won't eat it. I drink lots of sparkling water too.

I don't think there is anything wrong with eating later if you plan it as part of your daily intake. I would start by adding seltzer to your glass first, then the wine. Eventually, just don't buy anymore, once you finish your stash!

If it's boredom eating, then that's a different ballgame.

I should say snacking/ drinking.
I think I consume most of my daily calories after LO goes to bed at 8.
You would be amazed by what I can ingest in a two hour window!
I have totally trained myself to associate the time with a glass of wine and snacks. Any tips/ tricks to breaking this bad habit?
