Thanks all! We ended up switching hotels so we could do a suite option (one bedroom and one separated living room), which should allow us to put baby in the crib for her bedtime and let the toddler hang with us for a bit in the living space until her bedtime, and then we’ll put her down after baby falls asleep. Hopefully she’ll fall asleep on her own and then my husband and I can hang out in the living room and join the kids a bit later. Fingers crossed! I think the suite will at least make it more likely that everyone will get decent rest.

We put our daughter in the bathroom in a travel crib we have on our last vacation. Worked great!

@Calibee: but will that work with a toddler too? My preschooler usually has to go potty at night especially if she is stalling.

Put one of them in the bathroom with a white noise machine. It is a big pain if an adult needs to use the bathroom while the kid is sleeping, but scope out the nearest public bathroom. I have gone down to the lobby in my pjs and a sweater with no shame. Sleeping kid trumps everything else.

If a suite or adjoining rooms aren’t an option, I would empty the closet and wedge the crib/pnp in there so it’s in a darker quieter alcove.

@Anagram: this is usually what we do too. More often than not, we’re in the same room with our LOs, so they stay up later and we end up going to bed earlier.

We have always just turned lights low when it's bedtime and we read on our phones, and our kids go to sleep. We share hotel rooms a lot, and them seeing us has never been a problem. After they are asleep, we watch movies on the iPad or so whatever. Typically, we let the kids stay up a bit on vacation and we are also more tired, so we don't stay up too late after bedtime anyway.

We just did a trip recently with our nearly 3 year old and 11 month old. We had a room with two queens and we brought a pack and play for the baby. I also brought my white noise machine because both kids sleep excellently at home in their own rooms with white noise. We put them to bed and then went in the washroom while they were falling asleep and another night I lay on the bed in the dark and didn’t move because I didn’t want the baby to see me. No phone or anything until they fell asleep. My eldest was super excited to have a special hotel bed and called it “a big beautiful bed” and it actually was very special to her for some strange reason so that worked out well.

The first night on the way to our destination we watched a movie on our iPad with headphones and the second night in the way home, our eldest had trouble falling asleep so I lay in the bed with her until she passed out and my husband ended up falling asleep as well so I was solo for the rest of the night...in a dark hotel room with a bunch of sleeping people.

If upgrading to a suite in a different hotel is an option, I would try. If not, I would put the crib or pack and play in the furthest corner from the bathroom, and have the toddler sleep in the bed furthest from the pack and play. Then I would stagger bedtime, and have one parent take the toddler to the lobby or something and read books or walk around while the other parent put the baby to bed, then hide out of sight (in the bathroom if necessary). After the baby is asleep bring the toddler back and lay down with her. Possibly if both kids fall sound asleep you and SO could watch something on an iPad with headphones?

I really dislike all sharing a room and avoid t whenever possible. We just stayed in a 2 bedroom Airbnb and managed to get the kids to share a room by putting the younger one to bed earlier and bribing my almost 5 year old with a mermaid toy if she went to sleep super quietly and didn’t wake her.

And white noise machine is an absolute must. We have the marpac “rohm” which is their travel version and it’s a life saver.

Here is my comment, copied from this thread: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/how-do-you-get-your-baby-to-sleep-in-a-hotel

We had an emergency where we had to stay in a hotel when DD was 10 mo old. When we checked in, I asked if there way any suites available, so that the baby could have a separate room - no thing was available with a separate room, but they ended up upgrading us to a much larger room, which wrapped around a corner. So we put DD in her pnp in that corner that was the darkest, with her sound machine near by. Then DH and I snuggled under the covers with headphones and the ipad.
Also, this room was at the end of the hall next to the gym with no other 'neighbors' which helped because I could let DD cry a little without being worried about waking other people.

I have also heard great success with putting baby in the bathroom, but I was afraid of having to go in the middle of the night! plus I had to wake up early to shower, so in this instance it didn't work.

Could you call the hotel and talk to them about their rooms? Explain your situation and perhaps they can help you out.

We just stayed in a hotel room with our 3yo and 5 month old. We put the baby in a pack and play and after we were in for the night we wedged it by the door and the bathroom. It was darker there and he wasn’t able to see us from the crib. I shoved a white noise machine under the crib to block out other sounds since we stayed up and watched a movie with the 3yo. We ended up upgrading to a room with a balcony so we could sit outside after the kids were asleep.

We’re traveling with our 3 year old and 10 month old in a couple weeks and at this point, scheduled to share a hotel room with two beds and a crib set up (provided by hotel). Both kids are (knock on wood) good sleepers and sleep in their own rooms and beds/cribs without an issue at home. We have not traveled with our youngest yet, but in the past, when we’ve traveled with our toddler, she’s refused to sleep separately from us even when we’ve rented homes with separate sleeping spaces for her so we’re resigned to her sleeping in the same room as us. Hopefully she’ll sleep in the bed herself but likely one of us will share with her and the other parent gets to be the lucky one with a bed to themselves. I think she’ll sleep okay as long as she’s in a comfortable bed either with one of us or at least in the room with us. But my bigger concern is the baby - she typically sleeps better in her own space and without view of us (otherwise she clearly would rather be up and with us). Outside of trying to upgrade and get a room with a separate living space of some sort, any idea on how to get her to sleep in a crib in a shared hotel room situation? We’re considering moving hotels to something that allows for a suite situation if not available at our hotel but it’s possible that we won’t be able to make that switch and just make do with our current set up. Any suggestions to save us from 4 bad nights of sleep would be great! Thanks!
