In DH's family there are a lot of birthdays all around the same time of year (mixed in with things like Fathers Day and Thanksgiving) so we almost insist that birthdays get grouped. Otherwise it just gets overwhelming with too much. Dinners every weekend over and over. Weekends are precious time for use since DH works all week long (same with the rest of the family, weekends are important to us all).

@Arden: Haha! My birthday is in January and I've often encourged Christmas-birthday combo gifts. I'd rather get one awesome present than 2 piddly ones. ;)

I've never placed much importance to my birthday, but my sister certainly does. She doesn't like to share it. As for your situation, maybe your mom finds it too much to do three separate birthdays or perhaps your brother or your dad is really busy right now and it's just easier to combine them?

Totally used to sharing a birthday! in my family, we are all within a few weeks of each other; my dad's is 4/14, mine is 4/29, Mom's is 5/1, sister's is 5/8.

At minimum, my mom and I usually share a dinner and a cake!

I haven't ever had to share my birthday, but my DH family does everyones at once (they are all born within an 8 week period) if they celebrate at all. They aren't as big on birthdays as my family.

If we have birthdays close together, I'll make a point to make sure each child has an individual birthday party, somehow. I think it is important. As adults though, I don't think it really matters.

I was born right after Christmas, and my Mom made a special effort to make sure they didn't blend together. The day after Christmas she took down all the decorations and redecorated for my birthday. If friends or family gave me a joint Christmas/Birthday gift (which incidentally is cheap and kind of pathetic, lol), then she would hide half of them and rewrap the second batch in birthday paper so I could have presents on my birthday as well as Christmas.

I had to share my birthday with my sister growing up, hers is September 3rd and mine is the 23rd. It was kind of annoying, because by the time my actual birthday came around it wasn't really acknowledge. At some point we stopped having to share though, but by then I had stopped caring much about celebrating my birthday.

I've never had to share my birthday, and I like it that way! In my family, birthdays happen to be all spaced out through the year, so each birthday got a separate celebration. If I had to start sharing now, I wouldn't like it much either!

We always share birthdays! It just gets so hard to find the time to get everyone together for every celebration. My 2 kids are also only 2 weeks apart in terms of birthday. I almost had a joint birthday party for them this year, but it was hard since the 4 yr old wanted a fairy party and we felt bad to make the 1 year old boy have a fairy party for his 1st ever bday (not that he knows or cares). We ended up doing separate ones since mainly since big sister had a huge 1 yr old party and we felt bad not to do one for him.

we've always had to do this - on my mom's side, my mom and her sister and brother are all about a week apart so they 3 are in one fell swoop. my nana and I are 4 days apart, so we're together and usually on easter.

on my dad's side...oh man. my dad is 12/28 and my brother is 12/6. my dad and his sister share a birthday, and his other 2 sisters share a birthday together. of the grandchildren, one is 12/4, one is 12/5, and two are 12/6. then there are another 3 or so in january. they all get lumped together at Christmas.

there's also a lot of february and march - they get lumped in with me (april) around easter as well.

I was so excited that LO in the belly is due september because there's only a couple in september on my dad's side, but my [psycho] grandmother is 10/1...I hope to god she comes before then!!

essentially..everyone in my family, particularly my dad's side, shares a birthday with someone else. lol.

My sister and I have the same birthday, 8 years apart, Mom always does two different cakes (sometimes more, if she doesn't like our picks, ha!) and it's definitely a norm! My step Dad and his sister are same day, 8 years apart as well! We typically do Canada Day celebrations with my Mom's birthday!

My 2 sisters-in-law are jan 6 and 31, my brother-in-law is jan 22 and my daughter is jan 22! In the past my MiL has done a birthday every weekend for them, but I'm kind of hoping it all gets combined this coming year so that we don't have to spend the Christmas holidays with family, then new years and then every weekend in january with family. I love them, just not every weekend! I'd also like my LO to have her own day.

As a kid, I totally would have been mad to have to share my birthday. I'm the 27th of this month (yay september birthdays!), and my mom is oct 2, so we're really close, but we've never doubled the celebration up. But I think as an adult, you might have to let it go...

@Coco Bee: I don't think you're being selfish but think how luck you are that your family is so close you can do that! Maybe it's because my family is not close together (in radius) so we can't always celebrate together. I hope you enjoy it even though you have to share!!!
