I find that many people find it acceptable to judge all sorts of aspects of motherhood - weaning, how many kids to have, daycare vs no daycare...I am sick of it. If it is not polite to comment on how someone should lose 15 pounds or how someone should get a nose job or Botox, then why do they think it is polite to criticize someone's decision about weaning??!??!

@regberadaisy: My DH was born in the village and he said if his mom didn't have enough dm, they drank like watered down sweet potato congee from birth. Really a miracle that he grew up healthy and strong! My mom gets all these random mis-info from other people too, but at least she listens to me b/c she knows I do the research and she sees how DD has grown!

@snowjewelz: ugh. Yeah, the older Asian generation in general are so under educated about breastfeeding. Which is weird because most of them did Bf due to formula being unaffordable and not widely available, not to mention untrustworthy in China! But I get it, my parents were poor so my moms supply wasn't great since she was likely undernourished. She attributed my brothers tiny size to her lack of supply. So she feels some guilt that they could not afford formula for him /us.

@regberadaisy: Yeah, my SIL didn't breastfeed to a year either, so I get that she doesn't necessarily think breastfeeding is anything special, but still? Judging? And spewing random non-facts?? Annoying!

@Adira: this was my mom! Both times around 4m she told me I needed to stop. It was too much work on me. Then it's *harmful* to my daughter because it's so much work to suck the breastmilk out. I blew up on her about that and asked her who she hard that crap from. Supposingly a neighbor friend of hers told her that because her daughter (who doesn't BF!) told her mom that. Wtf mom. Believe your daughter and not your neighbor friend's daughter!!!! Grrrr

Oh yes. I was so annoyed with my mm for saying that if my daughter could ask to nurse (at 13 months) she was too old to be doing it, and as a result have decided not to share that she has since chosen to wean. I would have nursed a lot longer if it were up to me.

I work with all men, and one in particular feels the need to "call me out" every time I "MARTYR" myself by pumping. According to him, 100% of the nutritional benefits are transferred via colostrum and once the "milk" is in, there is zero nutritional benefit over formula.

I never say a word when I need to pump, just grab my bag and walk away. he insists I'm doing it for the extra breaks or so I can "feel like" a better mother.

i do NOT know why he feels the need to bring up this (totally inaccurate) point EVERY. DAY.

FYI- his wife never breastfed. My gut is that this is how they coped with it not working for them (she did try, but never breastfed more than a few feedings). That is fine- but don't attack me with your inaccurate notions.

My normally very sweet grandmother kept insisting I should give my EBF 4 week old a bottle of formula with rice cereal in it so that I could rest from bf-ing. I told her it was essentially fillerand had no nutritional value (the rice cereal I mean) and she still insisted that I should. Everybody's got an opinion on things that are none of their business :silly: .

I don't get why people make it their business when it doesn't affect them, but honestly I don't understand when people get upset by the comments either. If you're comfortable in the decisions made for your kids, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Maybe I have just become exceptionally good at not giving a shiz from dealing with a mom for 29 years whose every other sentence starts with "you should..."

No one flat it said you should wean, but I got a lot of "so how do you think you'll keep that up? Or, she doesn't really need it now, you know. Mostly asking when I planned to stop though.

At first I was really unsure when I was going to wean and what we would do, and that's when I got more negative comments. Once i decided that I would continue as long as it was working for us and that I hoped she would self wean, and confidently told that to anyone who asked, people started accepting that and asking fewer questions.

Massive eye roll. The older my baby gets, the more people ask me sort of surprised, "you are still nursing?" When I go to pump at work. They always say good for you, but I get the feeling the older he gets (8.5m now) the less supportive they will be of me needing to take my breaks at certain times. Maybe not, and we all are supposed to take the two breaks at my work, so it's not like I even have to tell anyone I am pumping.

I hate it when people says like that. It's none of their business. My usual response to comments/questions like this is "Well, actually, these days, the recommendation is..." or "Actually, my doctor says...". Most of the time, these comments are from older people so I just tell them their info is wrong.

I got alot of comments when I was on an elimination diet while BF-ing (my family was "concerned" but actually just annoyed that they couldn't go out to eat with us and that I needed special foods). They told me it was healthier for me and LO to wean but I said "No, actually the doctor said..." and then they shut up about it.

You could have pointed out that the WHO recommends breastfeeding until 2.

My son weaned himself just after a year and I was pretty sad about it, I would have kept nursing for longer but he was done.
