@Mrs. Yoyo: He might cry a little going down for one but it's all a farce. Within ten minutes he's usually asleep and always stays down for at least an hour each time, usually and hour and a half or longer. I like the two naps. Sometimes he stays down so log I'm afraid that he'll only get one nap but then he wakes up and starts acting really tired and cranky in a few hours. He seems to want two naps just as much as I do.

@NaturallyCathy: if he's still happy on two naps and you are too, I wouldn't worry about it. I went to one because LO was fighting one of the naps, and others have no choice because of daycare.

@littleveesmommy: Yup, find a few things you can do that wouldn't matter if you bailed if you had to. Fun activities like a stroller walk (ok if she falls asleep), trip to the park (fall asleep in the car ride home), things like that.

@T.H.O.U.: That's a great idea! I used to be afraid to schedule stuff around/before naps because DD is such a crank when she's tired, but maybe something new and fun would entice her enough to delay naps. =)

@NaturallyCathy: There was a swarm posting and a few board posts where bees shared their LO's age with the sleep, and it seemed like many had shifted to 1 nap by 12-14 months. I know not all babies are the same and my LO always was a sleepy baby so I delayed shifting until it seemed like she was ready. I waited until DD's second nap was only a short 30 minute catnap and was not really productive anymore, then I started stretching her first wake period. She naturally started refusing the second nap but of course, now I'm dealing with a too-large second awake period (it never ends...). I don't think there is anything wrong with two naps if it's working for your LO. I'm sure your LO will let you know when to make the switch. I felt pressure at first but just accepted my sleepy baby's natural clock. =) Also wanted to note my DD was taking 3 naps until she was 11 months - like I said, a very sleepy baby!

@Weagle: I would love a water table! I mean, DD would!!! =) Maybe a trip to the park around that time would help too.

@T.H.O.U.: I agree with this. When we were transitioning we scheduled play dates, pulled out the water table/kiddie pool, etc right before nap time. She would be happy enough to start playing and into it enough to not get cranky at the actual nap time.

Now you'e got me thinking I'm doing something wrong - my 17.5 month old still takes two naps. Is there a reason why you switched to one nap?

I know it's really hard but if you can plan am activity for 10, do lunch at 11 and then nap even by 11:30 that seems to be closer to the norm for this age.

@T.H.O.U.: I think her early wake up is making it next to impossible to push her nap later. She is literally falling asleep and if we try to push then she goes bonkers. I think I might try the earlier bedtime and see if that adjusts her morning wake up which would then naturally push nap later?

@Rubies: Yea I agree that it's a way too long gap but it was hard to push nap later due to early wake ups so hopefully an earlier bedtime will magically fix all? Haha I'm just speaking crazy now. But honestly I think early bedtime is a good start.

@Weagle: Yea I think she needs to adjust to a longer first wake period to help balance the afternoon wake period. 1230 seemed like the ideal nap time when I first switched but DD never lasted until then. I will need to try harder!

@Freckles: yup I definitely agree! I don't know why it didn't occur to me sooner. It seems so obvious! I blame my zombie brain. =\

I would move bedtime up until she is used to the one nap.

It seems like she is waking up at 5:30 because she's overtired. I would try moving the nap to 11 or 11:30 and bring the bedtime up to 6:30.

When she transitioned to 1 nap, i moved her bedtime from 7:30 to 6:30-6:45pm. Things got a lot better after that.

I would try to push the nap back. LO was on a similar 2 nap schedule, but with one nap she doesn't go down earlier than 12:30. It didn't take long for her to adjust. She sleeps at night from 8-7:30ish and naps at 12:30-1 for 2-3 hours.

I would try to have an earlier bedtime. Going from 12:30pm until 7:30pm seems like a long time.

We transitioned from 2 to 1 nap a month ago and DD has been having rough night time sleep. I think it partially has to do with needing to stretch her morning awake time longer so there isn't as big of a gap between sleep in the afternoon, but DD is literally melting down if I try to go past 4.5 hours.

Here is a peek at the old and the new:

2 Nap Schedule
630a - wake for the day
10-12a - nap #1
3-4p - nap #2
730p - bedtime

1 Nap Schedule
5-530a - wake for the day but obviously still tired
10-1230p - nap
730p - bedtime

Do you have any tips for this transition? She used to sleep through the night for 11hrs and now, she frequently wakes 1-2 times (possibly from being overtired?). I ask if she wants to nap in the afternoon and try to put her down, but she refuses. By the way, DD is 17.5 months and I know it's later than usual to transition but she was a generally sleepy baby. Any help from fellow bees would be really appreciated!!!

A sleep deprived mama...
