nope. she should NOT see you kid until her shingles are gone, cleared up, out of her system. she could still be contagious.

I'm 32 weeks pregnant and had a friend get them a few weeks ago. She also caught it early and got in meds but stayed away from me and all babies for 3-4 weeks.

I would definitely avoid her until she is 100% better.

I work in a clinic, though I'm not a doctor/nurse, I do know our clinic policy is that someone with shingles is required to schedule appointments only with nurses and not allowed to have any contact with anyone else when coming into the clinic. I wouldn't risk it! An 8 month old with chickenpox would be awful.

You are not being harsh! I'd say no way until she was totally symptom free. Better to be safe than sorry with a newborn!

My mom had a terrible case of shingles (on her face) several years back and her doctor still advised that I avoid contact until they dried up because I never had chicken pox. I probably wouldn't risk it just in case.

I would definitely ask your pedi, but I had shingles a few years ago and I feel like I was advised to stay away from those who had not had chicken pox and ppl who might have compromised immune systems. Perhaps someone with medical expertise will chime in though because I could be totally off base.

In the hospital setting, we are to consider someone contagious until their wounds are scabbed over and not weeping/oozing at all. But I work around adults. So I don't know what the rules are for kids being around them. I know pregnant women can't take care of those patients!

ETA: until lesions are "crusted and dried" are the words they use

My MIL has shingles and has been insisting that she see DS soon. She claims her doctor told her she wasn't contagious since she started meds, but she only came down with it two days ago. She wasn't honest with us last time she was sick, so I put my foot down and said no. DH thinks I'm being too harsh but I do NOT want my 8 week old contracting chickenpox!

Does anyone else have experience with shingles? I'm wondering how long they need to wait to see him again. I put in a call to our pedi's nurse line but I know MIL will ask my husband again before they call me back.
