Id just be cautious. Maybe ask her to keep it covered and wash her hands frequently just in case.

@Foodnerd81: oh I didn't know it was rare to get shingles again! She just had it in January though, so I don't know if that makes a difference--like if it never really went all the way away. I have no idea. But maybe it really is just eczema...I want to trust her, and I probably would have like a year ago, but she's gone a little off the rails since fil passed away in terms of always acting like she's the victim and giving dh guilt trips for the most ridiculous things. Like, sil was going to visit us in a month to help out with child care while lo's daycare is closed for spring break, and her reaction was "why are you leaving me out? I'm all alone! wah wah wahhhhhh." Because heaven forbid dh have an independent relationship with his own sister....

@nana87: I was kidding about taking her to the doctor, but it majorly sucks that you can't just trust her. But isn't it rare to get shingles twice anyway? So hopefully that means she's telling the truth...

@Foodnerd81: I think she'd be super offended/act dramatically if we made her go to a dr in front of us. She's had shingles before and had to take a huge amount of pills multiple times per day, so dh and I will just be watching her extra closely while she's here. If she is lying, and just decided on her own that she wasn't contagious/wouldn't let near her affected spots (it's on her neck so she can't hold lo), then I'm just done with her--she's no longer welcome in our home/near lo, at least for awhile. She's also going to be staying at my dad's apt, and my dad is having cataract surgery in about 10 days, so exposing him is also hugely not okay

@Mrs.Pinecone316: I agree- I'd be pissed if I went to a little kids bday party and found out people showed up with shingles. You never know who has added immune concerns- little baby at home, newly pregnant mom, someone who cares for a sick relative...

@nana87: can she get a third opinion with you present so you can actually believe her? I guess just watch her carefully and make sure she isn't touching too many kids.

I've had shingles, and was told what Mrs. Deer said-- that it's only contagious if someone touches blisters.. My spots were throughout my torso and upper legs-- areas where you'd have to make an effort to touch, you know? :) And, I didn't have blisters. So, I was ok to carry on with normal activity with no contagion risk. So, depending on where the spots were, I would have been fine with the shingles addled family visiting.

thank you everyone for your responses! this definitely made me feel justified/not too harsh in what we had decided.

As an update, mil got a second opinion--she was first diagnosed at urgent care and then went to her dermatologist--and supposedly does NOT have shingles, just excema. sil def has shingles and isn't coming, but mil IS coming...

You made the right choice by not having them come! I couldn't imagine bringing my child to birthday party and find out there were 2 people there with shingles. Just not worth the risk of exposing other adults/children/preggos.

I just had a severe case of shingles in my eye/nose/mouth in January. My face still randomly burns/twitches.
You could not pay me to go within 100 feet of someone with singles, I don't care how small the risk of infection is!

I see wanting to be cautious, but if the rash is covered it shouldn't be too big an issue. Someone needs to come into contact with the blistery rash to be at risk of them catching chicken pox. Sounds like you've already made the decision but something to keep in mind for next time!

I'd have done the same thing, out of respect for our party guests. Even if everyone was looking forward to the visit, knowing they were sequestered nearby and waiting on us to finish our activities would make me feel guilty and rushed. Not the vibe I'd care to have on LO's birthday weekend. I'm just glad they gave you a heads up; I have IL's who hide illnesses and it's made for some *stellar* interactions. :meh:

@regberadaisy: we actually already told them not to come, I was just curious to see what other people would do in the same situation/if we're being too harsh! there are a bunch of other family drama issues at work here too--dh is trying to figure out some boundary issues with them now--so I just wanted to hear objective perspectives. we would feel terrible if our party was the cause for anyone to get sick

@regberadaisy: my worry about having them come is that they'd really only see lo Saturday after her nap--they'd get in late Friday, not come over until after we're home from the concert, come over for a few hours after nap, stay away during the party Sun morning, and then leave Sun afternoon as sil has to work on Mon...it doesn't seem worth the ~8 hr in the car to me for them to only see lo for like 5 hrs on Sat and maybe an hour or 2 on Sun. Plus, they'll be here in a few weeks to visit again anyway

totally different when it's your dh, but ugh that must have sucked! neither dh nor I have had the vaccine, but I had chicken pox as a kid, and I think dh did but I'm not sure...lo's only had the first of the vaccines though, not the second dose
