He goes to daycare full time, so he has to be in shoes of some sort. It definitely seemed weird to me to put him in the hard-soled shoes so early, but I figured she knew what she was talking about. Should have trusted my mom-gut, I guess. Off to try to find a pair of SKRs or Pedipeds on sale! Thanks, all!

I always heard that barefoot was best - next best would be soft soled shoes - I used Pedipeds on both kids!

@littlebug: I can't believe they told you to get hard soled!! R had been walking a month and we went to Stride Ride and they said still to get her soft soled.
That said I really like the Smaller by See Kai Run better then Stride Ride.

We used robeez at that stage, only if she absolutely couldn't be barefoot. I can't imagine her trying to learn how to walk in hard soled shoes, and I believe doctors recommend soft soled shoes. She is walking pretty well now, and I still only put her in see Kai run smallers, which are very flexible, or the robeez.

ditto to @hilsy85. anecdotal, but there was a clear difference in the LOs who were in soft soles vs. hard soles and their confidence walking in my area.

I like the robeez mini shoez for that stage. They are just a tiny bit sturdier than the slipper style but still super soft. Plus they are still nice for crawlers.

We used Robeez for a long time. However, my mom kept bugging us to get hard soled shoes and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out, I refused to walk until they put me in hard soled shoes, so she thought that was just what you were supposed to do (I'm an only child - no siblings to compare).

Smaller by See Kai Run are awesome for pre-walkers and beginning walkers. And they're sturdy enough to protect your LO's feet while still being supple enough to help develop new walking skills. Now that my LO wears hard-soled shoes, I am so glad I held off for as long as possible.

I would keep him in soft soled shoes as long as possible, like robeez. It's important for them to feel the ground under their feet in order to get their balance, and soft soles are also better for foot development! Especially with warm weather, I'd stick to soft soles. We only moved to harder soles when it got colder and the ground was wet.

D is cruising like a pro and seems to be just days away from taking his first independent steps (daycare keeps writing that he's taking some steps for them, but he hasn't done it at home, despite our extensive encouragement, ha ha). We took him to Stride Rite about a month ago and got him fitted for shoes. The girl there recommended just going ahead and getting him the harder-soled shoes, since we thought he'd be walking pretty soon (he was starting to cruise at that point). But now I'm starting to wonder if we should go back and get him some softer-soled shoes first. Maybe the hard-soled shoes don't give him enough of a "feel" for the surface beneath his feet?
