We don't wear shoes inside. DS is 3 and has indoor shoes for daycare that he rarely wears. He likes to just wear socks. Until he was about 18 months he only wore soft soled shoes.

At daycare we keep LO in shoes because she goes in and outside so often. At home she is usually barefoot, but sometimes we put her shoes on because she likes it so much. She'll go grab her shoes and bring them to us to put them on her.

I think we kept him in shoes after he kept slipping in socks, even with grippies. I thought his feet would get too cold without something on them. That was last winter when he wasn't really walking outside yet, so the shoes weren't really dirty because they were just worn inside home and daycare.

For LO2 I plan to get her some Robeez or something similar, just for wearing inside. She'll likely start walking when it's still nice outside so I'll want different shoes for outdoors and I'll want her used to stuff on her feet. DS spent an entire summer with no shoes or socks, and then it was tough transitioning him to wearing those things when he needed to.

Even now at 15 mo when we're home DD is either barefeet or with socks. When she was at daycare as an almost walker or super early walker she was in soft soled mocs.

I'm not an expert but I think barefoot is better indoors! But we definitely are not the family that wears shoes inside the house.

@Foodnerd81: haha I hear you. These aren't grippies, they're actual soles - I should have included a link. I actually like them for muddy playground days (or days when they've turned the $#%* sprinklers on at the park so my kids are going to get soaked still want to run around on equipment)

Shoes off inside- I heard it was better from multiple sources plus it's cleaner. We all take them off.

@PinkElephant: anyone who makes toddler size socks without grippies on the bottom is an a$$hole. We have two pairs like that and when my LO finds them and insists on wearing them she always falls at least once.

My pediatrician said new walkers should be barefoot as much as possible or in soft soled shoes.

We also don't wear shoes inside our house though.

We are a no-shoe household. I also heard that it was better for kids to go barefoot most of the time.

No shoes because we also don't do shoes in the house. If you have all wood floors and slipping is an issue, Skidderz work really well - they're kind of like a sock with a rubberized sole, and you can throw them in the washing machine. And they're cheap enough to keep a pair for just indoors.

@gingerbebe: I hear that's an Asian thing, but it's also extremely common in Canada. I feel soooo uncomfortable when someone tells me to keep my shoes on inside.

Yesterday was the first time I'd heard of having kids wear their shoes indoors. Now I don't know what to think. I don't think daycare will go along with that.

We don't do shoes in the house, generally, because I'm Asian, but DH has similar feet issues so he prefers to keep sneakers on during the day even if he's at home. DS just became obsessed with shoes so he wants them on his feet all the time, so I try to get him to wear fuzzy slippers instead.

LO took his first steps earlier this month, just after turning 11 months. In light of this milestone and since he starts daycare in a week, we took him to get fitted for his first part of shoes today. It turns out that he has high arches and medium wide (D) feet, and so the best shoes for him have laces. Hopefully his home daycare will be okay with them.

They mentioned that it's good for toddlers to wear their shoes indoors as well, both to get used to wearing shoes and for their food function/development. I had thought that it was better for them to be barefoot indoors. What do you believe?
