I have the Britax side-by-side and it's fine for grocery shopping, but not clothing/mall store shopping. I like it but it's not the easiest to steer so I kind of wish I had gotten the double BOB even though it's bigger, because it would be so much easier to push on walks. I don't take the Britax into tight spaces anyway.

I have the side my side Citi Mini GT too and its advertised as being large enough to fit through single doorways which is what sold me. I take it with me to the mall mostly and parks and such and dont have a problem with it fitting in doors and such Some small shops are a little tight but as a whole it steers like a dream and so much easier to push then my Snap and Go ever was. For the grocvery stores and target and such I just use the carts provided since its just one less thing to get out of the car.

I only use the double stroller for shopping when I go to a mall. I use the shopping cart for both kids (or my older toddler walks) when I shop at the grocery store, Target or Costco.

I've only used our side by side at the grocery store and didn't have a problem. I can see that I will have a problem at some clothing stores because it was pretty tight with just an umbrella.

I have a side by side (City Mini GT) and haven't had too much difficulty with it. I'm in England, where things are about half the size they are in America (doorways, aisles, shops etc) and there haven't been too many occasions where I haven't been able to get through. We had a tandem initially whilst in Australia (the Britax B-Ready) and I found it incredibly unwieldy and difficult to steer. It felt like driving a bus, whereas my Mini GT turns on a dime and is far easier to maneuver.

TBH, I use our umbrella pram for our toddler and wear my 9 month old in the Ergo as much as possible - that's really the easiest!

We babywear as much as possible, but we also have a side by side double and a tandem snap n go. Getting through doors with either stroller sort of sucks! Look for places with automated doors because opening a door and wrangling a stroller through is rough. Our double (Bumbleride indie twin) is so easy to maneuver that it is nicer to have in public than our unwieldy double snap n go. Most big stores (Target, grocery store, department stores) have big enough aisles for our side by side. Smaller boutique places? I haven't even attempted it! I do take them to a small, local coffee shop in the side by side and manage there just fine!

I have no problem at regular grocery stores, pharmacies, target etc. It is hard to make turns in smaller clothing stores, city mini mart type places and smaller coffee shops, but TBH there's not much time for that with two anyway so it hasn't really been an issue.

@Mrs. Lion: I don't have experience with the Britax, but regarding the tandem, I do find our tandem very hard to steer at times.
The width of our side-by-side is difficult but the steering (and the fact that both seats recline for naps) makes it far easier to deal with around shops and city streets.

So I think we have pretty much decided on the Britax side by side stroller for when LO 2 is here, but one lingering concern I have is it's width when running errands. I know I won't be doing quite as much as I did with LO 1, since it will definitely be more difficult, but I am wondering how difficult this will be. I know it will fit through doorways, but what about aisles in stores? Anybody with experience?

Is it worth also getting a cheap tandem for errands? Or will they be annoying to steer and just as much hassle anyway?
