I had a short cervix and preterm labor with both of my kids. Worse with the first than the second. Both were born at 39 weeks!

With the second, I was on progesterone from early on. I also got steroid injections with both once I was about 26-28 weeks. This hastens the development of baby's lung surfactant and improves outcomes if your baby is born prematurely.

I had frequent monitoring (every week) - got an ultrasound to check my cervical length weekly and eventually weekly NST/BPPs. I had a lot of contractions, too. I wasn't on strict bedrest - I guess modified bedrest for a while with the first and just "take it easy" -rest with the second. Any activity, being on my feet, etc. made my contractions much, much worse.

My doctor also did fetal fibronectin (FFN) tests every 2 weeks. This is a swab they take of your cervix (kind of like a pap smear). If positive, you are at a higher chance to deliver within 2 weeks. If negative, you are almost certainly NOT going to deliver within 2 weeks.

Listen to your body, take it easy. If you have a good specialist, you are in good hands. If your contractions are worsening or you are having other preterm labor symptoms, call your doctor, go to the hospital, get checked out. Better safe than sorry since you already know you are at a higher risk with a short cervix.

My babies both went full-term and they are fine! But I know how scary it is! FWIW I had extremely rapid labors with both, I think because I had been having contractions since 15-20 weeks and my cervix had been short for a long time.

@pachamama: thank you! They prescribed me progesterone pills to start (inserted vaginally) so we will see how that goes. Good luck to you as well!

like @pachamama: I am on progesterone injections. I don't have experience with shortened cervix just preterm labor (much later at 32 weeks) and bed rest. Hang in there, I know the bed rest can be overwhelming. Glad they seemed to catch it early though, keep positive thoughts

I'm sorry, a short cervix is a little scary. I just wanted to to say I'm on progesterone injections (Makena, then switched to the generic intramuscular butt shot) so if you had any questions about that I could help. I think it does help with a shortened cervix. xoxo

I had my 20 week ultrasound today and was diagnosed with a short cervix (2.3). After speaking with two separate doctors, we’re quite scared. I’ve been prescribed progesterone and told to be on bed rest and to watch for symptoms. They will check in 1 week and know more from there. Does anyone have experience with this that they can share?
