@pachamama: T is great. He's our foster baby, yes. We've had him over a year now! He's a smart, shy, GOOFY, thoughtful little toddler now. He adores his foster sister and his current favorite things are shoes, chickens, goats, bags, hats and shoes. Did I mention shoes?

@Goldengirl: naps and night sleep are different kinds of sleeping and babies can often sleep in very different ways at different times. My lo1 only married in the stroller but would fall asleep on his own in the crib for night time. Who knows....

Lo1 took 45 minute naps only in the stroller from 3 months to 17 months when we switched to one nap and he moved to the crib. Lo2 is 5 months and gives us one long one and two 30-40 minute naps a day. The sort ones are often in the stroller or the Tula while chasing lo1 around. With my first I really worried about his too short in the stroller naps. Everything said I was doing it wrong, but he was happy and rested and sleeping fine at night so I finally stopped reading books about baby sleep and my life got way better.

@Goldengirl: I tried to keep up all the good sleep habits you hear about, so maybe that had something to do with it, but honestly I think the main reason she consolidated to two good naps and then one was just the passage of time. Hang in there!

So today he's taken 2 naps over 1.5 hours..!!! However, both were in the RNP and tonight was the night we were going to try out the crib. His naps in the crib have only ever been short. Now I'm scared to use the crib for overnight sleeping... gah!

@Daniellemybelle: I second the sentiment that at least one long nap a day really makes a difference. Even though she still catnaps sometimes, my LO is much much more cheerful and focused if she's been able to get through one decently long nap in a day.

@Shantuck: that's what my daycare does, basically forces him to nap longer. I have no luck doing that but he will cry and fuss for a while with them then go back down, usually as long as 2 hours these days.
@Goldengirl: daycare was awesome in that it got him on a routine that he does really well with. Phew!

We're dealing with this at 4 months and the advice I was given was to not get them up after they wake at that point. I've been going in and putting her back to sleep right away until she's napped for an hour or hour and a half. I think the idea is that they need to learn to connect their sleep cycles. Also, I've learned not to rush right in the second they make a noise and to let them fuss for a minute to see if they will settle and go back down. We've been getting some longer and some shorter naps since doing these things. Can't say those things are helping for sure but might be worth a try.

@Goldengirl: T napped for 25 min on the dot until maybe 7-8 months? I can't remember exactly. He also woke up every 25 min at night for quite some time. Ugh. Good news is, he's been sleeping through the night pretty consistently since 10 months or so, and has turned into a rather remarkable napper. Lately he's been sleeping 12-14(!) hours straight at night and taking either one 3-3.5 hour nap or two naps totaling as much as 4 hours during the day. He must be growing?! It feels like he's hardly awake these days! He's 18 months now.

@Banana330: I don't think I could ever bring myself to wake him up when he's finally asleep... those moments are too precious to me! haha

@delight: Today he took 8 naps! 8! It was nuts. Although maybe some I wouldn't even count. But the longest was 30 minutes. He actually seemed less cranky than usual and went down easier than he has been the past couple weeks... so maybe he's going through some sort of transition of sorts, who knows. But seriously, I can't get anything done, it's all in 20-30 minute increments! But at least he goes to sleep :)

@Dahlia: Omg! That sounds so rough. I don't hold DS to fall asleep anymore. Although now I'm starting to miss him sleeping on my chest :(

@MrsSCB: If he's in a good mood that's great! Mine definitely is not in a good mood with the short naps, which is why he needs another one so soon after. He's so much better with the proper amount of sleep, just seems to fight it or not know how to stay sleeping.

@Mrs. Champagne: I'm going to pretend I didn't read this... :silly:

@DesertDreams88: That all sounds pretty good! Did you do anything to drop the naps at those times, or it just happened on its own? Right now I feel like I have no control over when or how often he naps. If I don't let him take the lead, all hell breaks loose and he gets crazy overtired.

@daniellemybelle: I read that about the morning nap too, but he doesn't seem to want to obey that rule :) Every once in awhile he'll take a super long one, or I can extend with pacifier if he's tired enough. But usually he's just eyes wide open and there's no going back. I'm glad to hear you have a good napper now! Did you do anything special to get the consistency with naps, or it happened naturally? I agree, I'm obsessed with sleep, day and night. It kind of sucks and I know it's a big anxiety of mine. It's just so hard for me not to worry about it all, especially when there are so many "rules" to follow that all contradict each other.

@pachamama: maybe I need to sign him up for daycare just to get them to nap train him! :)

@Goldengirl: could have written this! My 13 month old started to take 1-1.5 hour naps when I went back to work and daycare got him in a great schedule. His FOMO game is strong. He just doesn't like long naps! I would say at 7 months he started taking longer naps, now he does 45,min in the morning and longer ones in the afternoon.

Cat naps suck! I only had one LO and I was a SAHM so I had the ability to literally rock LO back to sleep when she woke up from a nap 3 times a day. It worked maybe half the time. I read up on "nap extensions" and I would watch the monitor like a hawk. She always stirred at the same time (I think 25 minutes but I can't remember now) and I would bolt in there, try to pat her back to sleep, and if that didn't work I would rock her. Sometimes that didn't even work, but if I could get her back to sleep, she would take a really long nap and wake up happy so at the time it was worth it to me.

Looking back though, it was crazy how much time and energy I devoted to managing her sleep. I don't think I will be able to do that with #2! I think sometimes the cat nap phase is something you have to suffer through. I did read something on some sleep website that said to aim for one long nap per day, preferably in the morning. So maybe see what you can do to extend just one nap even through patting/rocking/etc. and see if that helps overall?

I will agree with what others have said that this too shall pass. My LO eventually went to two 2-hour naps consistently and then dropped to one 3-hour nap that she still takes almost every day at 3.5 years old!

At around that age, my LO was doing 4 naps, 45 min - 1hr (so my response might not be very helpful, but.....)
Around 6m my LO dropped to 3 naps, which were 45min-1.5hr.
Around 8m my LO dropped to 2 naps, which were 1-1.75 hours.

I agree... it feel likes you're always putting them down for naps, feeding, or changing diapers.

6 months old. We had a horrible 4-month sleep regression for both nights and naps with my son. Nights resolved themselves within a few weeks, but naps took a full two months to lengthen :bummed: . Sorry to have to report that, but I tried EVERYTHING to lengthen those naps and it just naturally happened when he figured out how to link sleep cycles. Hope your baby does it more quickly than mine did!

@Goldengirl: 4-5 naps a day at that point. DD was super alert as a baby so it was harder to get her down. There is the wake to sleep method, where you gently nudge them before they usually wake and then pat/hold/sush back to sleep to extend the sleep cycle. I couldn't get it to work for us, but friends had success with it.

@winniebee: @Banana330: when the naps are so short and they're so young, how many naps did your LO have in a day? I find it confusing because everything seems to suggest 3-4 naps is normal around now, for a total of 4-5 hours... but if he's constantly taking these super short naps, 4 naps definitely is not enough! Today has been the most ridiculous day ever... he's on his 5th nap already! Going down pretty easily which is really nice, but just not staying down long.

This isn't what you want to hear, but my cat napping, nap hating kid didn't really take longer naps until 14 months. The only long naps she took before then were every once in a while she was being worn in the baby carrier or on long car trips. She's 18 months now, and most days takes a 45 minute to 2 hour nap. This is the best she's ever napped.

@Goldengirl: if it is any consolation, DS2 became an EXCELLENT napper after he was solidly on 2 naps. He would usually sleep 1.5 hours in the morning and often 2 or 2.5 in the afternoon. He was a terrible sleeper as a young baby (and didn't STTN until 14 months), but became a rockstar sleeper (night and naps). At 27 months he is still a great sleeper and napper :)

My 8.5 month old still occasionally takes a 30 minute cat nap, although she generally sleeps for 1 or 1.5 hours. At 16 weeks, cat naps were definitely still the norm. She needed a fair amount of help to get to sleep at that point, too, so I totally hear you feeling like you're constantly putting a baby to sleep. Her naps started consolidating on their own after 5.5 or 6 months (occasional long ones before that, but it wasn't predictable or reliable). At about 7.5 months, she was pretty much doing two longer naps a day.
I remember one of those first long, 2.5 hour naps when she was around 3 months, everyone in the house checked on her at least once to make sure she was OK, we were so used to the 30 minute sleep cycle.

@winniebee: Oh lord, please tell me this won't last for 8 months. I'll choose to use your DS1 as inspiration lol. And yah, it's crazy how often it's 30 minutes EXACTLY. I kind of hold my breath when I see it's been half hour, and look at the monitor and see him stir and I'm like noooooo!

DS1 took cat naps from about 3.5 months until 5.5 months. 30 mins on the button, with the very rare longer swing nap. Getting longer naps coincided with his first cold and then starting daycare, but I think he probably just grew out of it.

DS2 took cat naps (30-40 mins) from about 3.5 months until 7.5 months!!!!! It was brutal. He just needed to grow out of it. He was in his crib and out of the swaddle, etc as of 5 months and that didn't seem to help.
